Europe's largest ecological street festival directly in front of the Brandenburg Gate
The Umweltfestival has been organized by GRÜNE LIGA Berlin e.V. since 1996 and is considered Europe's largest ecological street festival. On one Sunday in June, the Straße des 17. Juni between the Brandenburg Gate and the Großer Stern transforms into a festival mile – with over 200 exhibitors from politics, NGOs, business, science, education, and administration. More than 100,000 visitors come every year.
For 2026, GRÜNE LIGA has chosen the motto 'Soil – You're Standing on It'. The focus will be on topics related to soil as a basis for life: de-sealing of urban areas, soil use in agriculture, climate protection through humus buildup, waste management, competition for land between housing, agriculture, and nature conservation, soil life, and soil biology.
The main stage features a mix of speeches by the State Secretary for the Environment, talks with scientists, panel discussions with politicians and civil society, music acts, and the awarding of the 'Grand Prix du Festival'. Other stages are dedicated to educational formats, hands-on activities for children, and live music. The festival is open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with opening at 11:00 AM with live music.
A dedicated 'ECOMICE SPACE' zone at the Soviet War Memorial offers workshops, theater performances, small concerts, and interactive installations between 11:30 AM and 6:00 PM. This expands the festival's classic street format with participatory spaces. The organizer is GRÜNE LIGA Berlin e.V., funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).
