About UMWELTFESTIVAL

Once a year, GRÜNE LIGA Berlin transforms the Straße des 17. Juni around the Brandenburg Gate into a festival mile for the environment, climate, and nature conservation. Hundreds of exhibitors, hands-on workshops, discussion rounds, a stage program, and organic gastronomy – the UMWELTFESTIVAL is one of the largest environmental events in Germany. In 2026, the event on June 7th will focus on soil – its diversity, function, and importance for all of us.

Berlin's largest environmental festival mile

The UMWELTFESTIVAL by GRÜNE LIGA Berlin has been held annually at the Brandenburg Gate since the mid-1990s – one of Berlin's most symbolic addresses. The Straße des 17. Juni, leading from the Brandenburg Gate through the Tiergarten towards the Victory Column, becomes a festival mile for one day with hundreds of stands, several stages, hands-on workshops, and information booths. GRÜNE LIGA Berlin is the Berlin state association of a nationwide network of ecological clubs and initiatives – its sponsorship ensures a clearly defined environmental profile that is both politically and educationally anchored.

Exhibitors and Hands-on Stations

Environmental associations, ecological companies, initiatives from sustainable mobility (cycling, rail, car sharing), organic farming, the energy transition, and climate protection and education present themselves on the festival mile. A characteristic feature of the festival is the hands-on approach: at many stands, you can try out materials, participate in workshops, or apply knowledge directly. This is not a passive trade fair format, but an experience-based environmental arena.

Stage Program and Discussions

The stages feature a mix of live music, dance groups, talk rounds with female environmental activists, scientists, and politicians, as well as programs for children. Thematic focuses are set anew each year – in 2026, it is soil: its diversity, its function as a CO2 sink and water reservoir, its importance for agriculture, food, and climate. The topic ties into the UN's efforts to establish the "International Year of Soil" as an ongoing task.

Organic Gastronomy from the Berlin Countryside

The gastronomic offerings at the UMWELTFESTIVAL are consistently organic: stands with organic products from the Berlin-Brandenburg region, vegetarian and vegan specialties, fair-trade coffee, regional juices. Visitors to the festival can also enjoy a culinary day trip through Berlin's sustainable food scene – a concept that has long been standard in Berlin, but is implemented particularly consistently at the UMWELTFESTIVAL.

UMWELTFESTIVAL — edition 2026

The UMWELTFESTIVAL 2026 takes place on Sunday, June 7, from 11 AM to 6 PM on the Straße des 17. Juni around the Brandenburg Gate. Focus 2026: Soil – diversity, function, and importance. Hundreds of exhibitors, hands-on workshops, discussion rounds, stage program, and organic gastronomy. Free admission. Organizer: GRÜNE LIGA Berlin e.V.

The 2026 edition puts the topic of soil in the spotlight – a focus designed to highlight the diversity of soil functions: soil as a CO2 sink, water reservoir, nutrient base for agriculture and food, and habitat for billions of organisms. Exhibitors and program items will address the topic accordingly, from soil analysis and permaculture to the debate on soil sealing in Berlin.

The festival is designed as a family event and is also politically ambitious – GRÜNE LIGA Berlin also uses the date to make current environmental policy demands visible. Visitors to the festival typically combine information, hands-on stations, culinary offerings, and stage performances. The festival mile can be walked in two to three hours at a leisurely pace.
