Trail run comeback in Hauenstein as part of the WasgauCup 2026 with a 10.2 km main race
The Shoe Workers Hard Trail – named after Hauenstein's shoemaking tradition – last took place eight years ago. In 2026, the race returns to the region, joining the established WasgauCup trail running series. This comeback reflects the growing importance of trail running in the Pfälzerwald, which offers ideal conditions for the sport with its rock formations, dense mixed forests, and challenging terrain.
The main event is the eponymous Hard Trail: 10.2 kilometers with 450 meters of elevation gain. The course profile combines flowing paths through the Pfälzerwald with steep ascents to the surrounding rocks – pure nature, as the organizers advertise. The start is at 3:30 PM at the Wasgaufreibad. With its distance and elevation profile, the race is aimed at ambitious hobby runners and trail running enthusiasts.
For those seeking a less challenging experience, there's the 5 km Volkslauf by Eiscafé Winter – 5 kilometers with 160 meters of elevation gain, also starting at 3:30 PM. For the youngest runners, the SCHUH-FLITZER Bambinilauf offers a 400-meter course for those born in 2016 and younger, starting at 2:45 PM. This ensures every age group finds a suitable race.
The Shoe Workers Hard Trail is part of the 14th WasgauCup, the region's trail running series. To be eligible for the Cup, participants must be at least 16 years old and complete at least five qualifying races. Registration via RaceResult starts on May 15, 2026.
For over a century, Hauenstein was one of the centers of the German shoe industry. This tradition gives the trail its name – "Shoe Workers" as a tribute to the generations who worked in the Hauenstein shoe factories. The German Shoe Museum in the town center commemorates this history. Today, Hauenstein is primarily known as the gateway to the Wasgau region – with the Teufelsfels rock formation as its landmark and an extensive network of hiking trails – shaping the regional identity.
The race is part of the 14th WasgauCup 2026. Registration via RaceResult starting May 15, 2026. Free entry to the Wasgaufreibad after crossing the finish line, free refreshments after the award ceremony.
