Nationwide event day with free admission and guided tours in Trier — Motto 2026: NetzWERKE
The Open Monument Day was introduced in 1993 as the German version of the European "Journées du Patrimoine" and has become one of Germany's largest cultural events — with around four million visitors nationwide annually. In Trier, between 20 and 40 monuments participate each year: Roman World Heritage sites, medieval churches, monasteries, bourgeois houses, industrial buildings, bridges, fountains, city fortifications, and archaeological sites.
The 2026 motto — "NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure" — focuses attention on historical water supply systems, road networks, sewage systems, bridges, railway facilities, and energy infrastructures. In Trier, with the Roman Bridge, Roman aqueducts, Imperial Baths, and ancient city drainage, there is a particularly strong thematic connection. Several guided tours on Roman infrastructure are expected, supplemented by programs on medieval and modern buildings.
The Trier Cathedral, as the most important World Heritage site, is regularly accessible free of charge all year round, but offers special guided tours on the Open Monument Day.
The 2026 edition coincides with the 40th anniversary of Trier's World Heritage status. With the motto "NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure", there is a particularly strong thematic connection to Trier's Roman infrastructure buildings — Roman Bridge, aqueducts, Imperial Baths, city drainage. The complete list of participating Trier monuments will be published on tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de at the beginning of September 2026.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in August/September. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
