Maritime Festival on the Peene
The Loitz Water and Harbour Festival has been a firm fixture in the Peene town's event calendar for years. At the sports boat marina, where the Peene winds its way through gentle hills on its way to the Peenestrom, the town opens its harbour facilities on the second weekend of September for a lively Volksfest (folk festival) by the water.
Highlights include the cutter rowing races with local teams, a colourful boat parade with illuminated sports boats, a laser show on Saturday evening, and a stage programme with regional bands and Schlager (popular German music) acts. A market for traders, children's attractions, bouncy castles, and gastronomic stands along the harbour promenade make the festival a family event.
For the 2026 edition, Loitz has received a special honour: for the first time, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Championship in Cutter Rowing will be held at Loitz Harbour. Cutter boats with up to ten rowers and a helmsman will compete on the Peene. Thus, the 2026 Harbour Festival combines a folk festival and a sports event.
Loitz in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's oldest Hanseatic towns and was once an important transhipment point for Peene shipping. The Water and Harbour Festival builds on this maritime tradition and strengthens it as a vibrant town festival.
The 2026 edition places a special emphasis on the first-time hosting of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Championship in Cutter Rowing. Cutter boats with up to ten rowers and a helmsman will compete against each other on the Peene. This major sporting event is embedded within the classic programme of a boat parade, stage music, a market for traders along the harbour promenade, and an evening laser show on Saturday. The town expects visitors from all over Vorpommern.
Detailed programme and band performance times will be published on loitz.de shortly before the festival.
