When spring is finally proclaimed on the evening of April 30th, Loitz invites you to the traditional Tanz-in-den-Mai (Dance into May) celebration on the sports field at Hiddenhausener Straße. Live music, a bonfire, and an open dance floor under the open sky attract residents and guests from the entire Vorpommern-Greifswald district to the small Hanseatic town on the Peene River. A tradition that is observed in many North German towns on Walpurgisnacht – with its very own charm in Loitz.

The Tanz in den Mai 2026 will take place on Thursday, April 30th, starting at 8:00 PM at the Loitz sports field on Hiddenhausener Straße 1. Live music, a dance floor, a May bonfire, and catering will usher in spring.

On the eve of May 1st, the Loitz sports field opens its gates from 8:00 PM. Live music or a DJ set will provide a dance atmosphere, the traditional May bonfire will be lit, and food and drinks will be served on site. The event is open to all age groups and lasts until the early hours of May 1st. The town of Loitz will announce specific details about the music and catering shortly before the date.

Getting There

By car via the B194 from Demmin or Anklam. The sports field is located on the southwestern outskirts at Hiddenhausener Straße 1. Parking is available on-site and in the town center.

A Spring Custom with a Long Tradition

The "Tanz in den Mai" dates back to the ancient Walpurgisnacht, when the end of winter is celebrated on the night before May 1st. In Loitz, the town keeps this custom alive: every year on April 30th, the sports field on Hiddenhausener Straße opens its gates for a communal open-air spring festival.

Program and Atmosphere

Food and drinks are served from the early evening, a band or DJ provides dance music, and as darkness falls, the traditional May bonfire is lit. Families arrive early to be present at the raising of the Maibaum (Maypole), while younger guests stay until the early hours of May 1st, celebrating Walpurgisnacht in a relaxed, village atmosphere.
