A Kärwa Like from the Picture Book of the Hersbrucker Land
The Kirchweih Engelthal – in Franconian »Engelthaler Kärwa« – is one of the most characteristic village Kirchweihen in the southeastern Nürnberger Land. Engelthal, with about 1,000 inhabitants, lies on the edge of the Franconian Alb Nature Park and is known far beyond the municipal borders for its old Cistercian convent complex.
Kirwaboum, Kirwamadla, Kärwabaum
As is customary in Middle Franconia, the Kärwa is carried by the young generation of the village: The Kirwaboum and Kirwamadla take over the organization, decorate the Kärwabaum, lead the parade, and ensure the traditional Austanzen der Strauß (dancing for the maypole wreath). The parish church and the festival grounds in the village center become the focal point of a weekend that grips the entire village from Thursday to Monday.
Typical Program Points of a Franconian Kärwa
- Erecting the Kärwabaum with brass music and beer tapping
- Parade with clubs and traditional costume groups
- Dance evenings in the festival tent with Franconian bands
- Frühschoppen on Kirchweih Sunday
- Austanzen der Strauß as the highlight on Monday evening
- Franconian catering with Bratwurst, Schäuferla, and smooth regional beer
Location and Surroundings
Engelthal is located on the connecting road between Hersbruck and Altdorf near Nuremberg, in the middle of a scenically attractive region of the Franconian Alb.
