Traditional Franconian Kirchweih in the Nürnberger Land
The Kirchweih Engelthal – in Franconian »Engelthaler Kärwa« – is one of the most characteristic village Kirchweihen in the southeastern Nürnberger Land. Engelthal, with about 1,000 inhabitants, lies on the edge of the Franconian Alb Nature Park and is known far beyond the municipal borders for its old Cistercian convent complex.
As is customary in Middle Franconia, the Kärwa is carried by the young generation of the village: The Kirwaboum and Kirwamadla take over the organization, decorate the Kärwabaum, lead the parade, and ensure the traditional Austanzen der Strauß (dancing for the maypole wreath). The parish church and the festival grounds in the village center become the focal point of a weekend that grips the entire village from Thursday to Monday.
Engelthal is located on the connecting road between Hersbruck and Altdorf near Nuremberg, in the middle of a scenically attractive region of the Franconian Alb. Visitors to the Kärwa can easily combine the experience with a hike in the Franconian Switzerland – Veldensteiner Forst Nature Park or a visit to historic Hersbruck.
The Engelthaler Kärwa 2026 takes place from Thursday, June 25, to Monday, June 29, 2026. The dates are listed in the annual overview »Kirchweihen und Feste im Nürnberger Land« (N-LAND) and follow the classic schedule, which was already maintained in 2025 (same weekend at the end of June).
The focus is on the erecting of the Kärwabaum, the parade on Sunday, the Austanzen der Strauß on Kärwa Monday, and the traditional Franconian catering. The festival is organized by the Kirwaboum and Kirwamadla Engelthal in cooperation with the local associations.
Detailed program and times will be announced via the municipality of Engelthal and the N-LAND Kirchweih page.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. A small entrance fee may be charged for individual dance evenings in the festival tent.
By car via the A 9 (Hormersdorf exit) or via the B 14 (Lauf an der Pegnitz – Hersbruck). Train travelers should go to Hersbruck-Hbf and take the bus line to Engelthal.
Admission to the festival grounds and tent is free; individual dance evenings may charge a small entrance fee.
Kirchweih Sunday with Frühschoppen and parade is the most accessible day for visitors from outside. Those who want to experience Franconian customs should come on Monday evening for the Austanzen der Strauß.
