Traditional Maibaumstellen in the Pforzheim district of Dillweißenstein — customs at Ludwigsplatz
Dillweißenstein is one of the southern districts of Pforzheim in the Enzkreis (Pforzheim City District 08231) — a historically grown suburb of the Goldstadt with a rural-bourgeois identity. The Maibaumstellen is a deeply rooted tradition here: Every year on the last Saturday in April (before May 1st), a tall, ribbon-adorned Maypole is erected on Ludwigsplatz in the center of the district — a symbol of spring, fertility, and community.
The date for 2026: Saturday, April 25, 2026, 10:30 AM. The erection of the pole is handled by the Technical Service of the City of Pforzheim with a crane and safety team. Before and during the erection, attendees gather in the square, with brass music (often the Pforzheim City Band or a local music club) accompanying the event. Afterwards, the Maibaum remains standing for the entire month of May until it is taken down in early June.
The organizer is the Bürgerverein Dillweißenstein e.V. — an association of the district's citizens, dedicated to cultural identity and the preservation of traditions. In addition to the Maibaumstellen, the association also organizes the summer festival and the Advent market — together, these events embody the local self-understanding. The Bürgerverein finances the tree itself, while the City's Technical Service provides personnel and equipment free of charge.
The Maibaumstellen is one of the oldest and most symbolic spring traditions in German-speaking regions. The pole, adorned with ribbons and greenery, often 20 to 30 meters high, is traditionally erected on April 30th, but in many communities, it is moved to the preceding Saturday so that everyone can participate. The tradition is particularly vibrant in Southern Germany — Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg — and in Austria. It combines pre-Christian spring rituals with Christian symbolism (the pilgrimage to Mary in the Marian month of May).
The Maibaumstellen lasts about one to one and a half hours — a traditional act, not a large-scale event. Those who want to get to know the Pforzheim Goldstadt suburb and its bourgeois identity will find an ideal impression here. Afterwards, the Bürgerverein invites guests to coffee and cake, often at the club house or a nearby inn.
