Traditional Franconian Kärwa in the Nürnberger Land
In the Nürnberger Land, the Kirwa (Middle Franconian for "Kirchweih") is more than just a festival: it is the annually recurring, identity-defining celebration of the village and its associations. In Henfenfeld, the local Kirchweihverein organizes the Kirwa on a voluntary basis – with the support of other associations, the fire brigade, and the Kerwajugend.
Henfenfeld is a municipality with around 1,900 inhabitants in the Nürnberger Land district in the state of Bavaria, located in the picturesque Pegnitz Valley between Hersbruck and Lauf an der Pegnitz. The region is part of the historic Franconian Switzerland and is known for its mix of forests, rocks, and wine and fruit cultivation. Henfenfeld itself has a long history; Henfenfeld Castle (now a hotel/conference center) is one of its landmarks.
A central element of every Franconian Kärwa is the Kerwajugend: young adults from the village who help shape the festival program, rehearse traditional songs, and play a leading role in the Kerwa parade. The highlight is the Kerwabaum-Austanzen on Sunday afternoon: the Kerwajugend dances in a circle around the decorated Kerwabaum, a song is sung, and the traditional Kerwa couple is announced.
The Kirwa Henfenfeld does not attract tourist crowds – and that is precisely its charm. Anyone who wants to experience a real Franconian village festival, without the anonymity and event character of a large Volksfest, is in the right place here. Franconian sausages from a charcoal grill, tapped beer from regional breweries, voluntary service by association members, and cozy gatherings under marquees form the core of the Henfenfeld Kirwa.
The Kirwa Henfenfeld traditionally takes place in early August – a popular date in Franconia, as many families visit their hometowns during the main holiday season and can thus experience the region's Kirwas. In the Nürnberger Land, the Kirwas follow one after another, village by village, allowing Kirwa fans to move from one festival to another in midsummer.
According to regional advance announcements (n-land.de, Radio Energy), the Kirwa Henfenfeld 2026 is planned for the first two weeks of August. Two date variants are circulating: August 6–10 (n-land.de) and August 8–12 (Radio Energy). The final date will be officially announced by the Henfenfeld Kirchweihverein shortly before the event.
The format traditionally follows the Franconian pattern: festival opening in the late afternoon with beer tapping, dance evenings with cover bands on Friday and Saturday, festival service and Frühschoppen on Sunday, the Kerwabaum-Austanzen by the Kerwajugend as the highlight, and family day and conclusion on Monday/Tuesday.
The Franconian Kerwa catering with Bratwürste from a charcoal grill, Schäuferla, regional beer, and homemade cakes remains the gastronomic backbone of the event.
