One of Germany's most beautiful Christmas markets in the historic Freiburg Old Town
The Freiburg Christmas Market is one of the most traditional Christmas markets in Southern Germany. Its roots reach back to the 19th century to the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) on Münsterplatz at the time; in its current form as a distributed city center market, it has been running uninterrupted since 1973 — for over 50 years. The organizer is FWTM Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GmbH. The combination of the medieval Freiburg Old Town — with its Bächle (small water channels), half-timbered houses, the Minster with its distinctive tower — and the special fir tree atmosphere of the Southern Black Forest region makes the market a magnet for visitors from all over Germany, Switzerland, Alsace, and beyond.
The market area is spread across several squares and streets of the historic Freiburg city center. The central Rathausplatz hosts the classic large market section, Franziskanerstraße extends as a market street, Unterlindenplatz adds additional stalls, Kartoffelmarkt has its own character with a focus on arts and crafts, Predigertor and Turmstraße complete the market loop, Rotteckring brings the market almost to the city limits, and Colombipark serves as a photo spot with special lighting. Over 120 stalls in this distributed market structure — visitors can wander through an entire market city.
The gastronomic offerings are typically classic Christmas market fare, yet with their own Black Forest accent: roasted almonds in numerous flavors, crêpes of French-Alsatian provenance, sausages in many varieties, mulled wine (Glühwein) from Baden and Alsatian wines, punch, baked apples (Bratapfel), Black Forest cherry specialties, Swabian Maultaschen, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), sugar candy doughnuts (Kandiszucker-Krapfen), gingerbread (Lebkuchen), chocolates from regional manufacturers. In addition, handicrafts: carved nativity scenes, wooden figures, Christmas decorations, leather goods, ceramics, candles, Advent wreaths.
The market runs for 35 days — longer than most other German Christmas markets. Weekdays and Saturdays 10:00 AM–8:30 PM, Sundays 11:30 AM–7:30 PM. Opening day (Friday, November 20, 2026, corrected start) 2:00 PM–8:30 PM, the last day (Wednesday, December 23) ends at 7:30 PM. The market remains closed on Totensonntag (All Souls' Day, November 22) out of religious consideration.
Freiburg im Breisgau (independent city in the state of Baden-Württemberg, district code 08311, around 235,000 inhabitants) is the university city of the Southern Black Forest and is considered Germany's sunniest city. The historic Old Town with the striking Freiburg Minster (Gothic sandstone building with the famous tower), the characteristic Bächle (small water channels along the streets), and the half-timbered ensemble form one of the most beautiful Christmas market backdrops in Southern Germany. The Freiburg Christmas Market complements the city's main tourist attractions and is one of the most important visitor magnets during Advent.
From November 19 to December 23, 2026, the Freiburg Christmas Market opens for what is now the most traditional Advent event in Southern Germany. Over 120 festively decorated stalls are spread across eight squares and streets of the historic Freiburg Old Town — the market is not a single central square, but an entire market city to wander through.
FWTM coordinates with stallholders on assortment, lighting, and program. Mulled wine (Glühwein) from Baden and Alsatian wines, roasted almonds, crêpes, Black Forest specialties, and a dense range of crafts — from carved nativity figures to leather-bound notebooks — make the market one of the most diverse Christmas market experiences in Southern Germany.
