Scandinavian Midsummer Festival in Flensburg's Old Town — three days of Hygge by the fjord
Flensburg is located at the innermost tip of the Flensburg Fjord, where Germany is to the north and Denmark is close by. For years, the city has seen itself as a bridge between the two cultures — and the Sommer Hygge Festival makes this self-image visible and tangible. "Hygge" is the Danish word for cozy warmth, shared time, and everyday well-being — and this is precisely the atmosphere the festival aims to bring to the Old Town.
From Friday, June 19th, to Sunday, June 21st, 2026, the central squares of Flensburg's Old Town — Marienkirchhof, Nordermarkt, and Willy-Brandt-Platz — will serve as event spaces. Live music, street art, performances, hands-on workshops, and a flea market for Scandinavian design and vintage will alternate on the squares. Families will find craft and creative stations, and bands will play on the open-air stages in the evenings.
In terms of content, Sommer Hygge is inspired by Nordic Midsummer festivals: long days, soft summer evenings, outdoor music, shared meals, and activities in public spaces. The festival is deliberately designed to be accessible — many offerings are free of charge, while some request a voluntary donation. This positions Flensburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein as the northern capital of summer's start.
The organizer is the Tourismus Agentur Flensburger Förde GmbH, which implements the festival in cooperation with the City of Flensburg, local cultural stakeholders, and initiatives. The connection to the Danish neighbors plays a role in the program — artists from Sønderjylland and Southern Denmark are regularly part of the lineup.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven format of three days of open-air programming in the Old Town. The Flensburg Tourism Agency, as the organizer, designs the program together with local artists, associations, and initiatives, complemented by acts from Danish Sønderjylland and the Baltic Sea region.
On the three main stages at Marienkirchhof, Nordermarkt, and Willy-Brandt-Platz, concerts, performances, and workshops will alternate. The Midsummer atmosphere is a core element of the festival's brand — Scandinavian connections, a vintage flea market, and creative hands-on stations are expected to shape the program in 2026 as well.
The detailed 2026 program will be updated on flensburger-foerde.de/sommer-hygge. Expected are:
