Traditional Schützenfest on the banks of the Oste – since the 19th century
With its 175th anniversary in 2024, the Neuhaus Schützenverein is one of the oldest clubs of its kind in Northern Germany. Its roots date back to the 19th century, a time when shooting clubs were reorganized in many places and today's clubs developed from the old citizen militias. For generations, the Schützenfest has remained the central social event of the year.
Neuhaus is picturesquely situated on the Oste, a tributary of the Elbe that shapes the region culturally and scenically. The historic village with its old harbor, castle, and characteristic marsh landscape is also popular with tourists. During the Schützenfest, the community welcomes guests from surrounding towns and the wider region, including many visitors from Hamburg.
The shooting competitions for the royal title are the highlight of the festival. Shooters compete at the club's shooting range, and the proclamation of the new Schützenkönig (shooting king) or Schützenkönigin (shooting queen) marks the social peak. The coronation ball and king's dinner provide a festive setting.
The grand parade on Sunday winds through the historic town center of Neuhaus, past old houses and along the Oste river. Marksmen in uniform, marching bands, friendly clubs, and the reigning monarch create a colorful spectacle. Alongside the official program, the funfair with rides, candy stalls, and food stands ensures a Volksfest atmosphere.
Traditionally, the Schützenfest takes place on the second weekend in July. The exact date for 2026 will be announced by the Schützenverein in the spring. Visitors from outside the area are advised to plan well in advance, as Neuhaus is very busy during the festival days.
The 2026 edition follows the classic schedule of the Schützenfest in Neuhaus an der Oste. Over the festival weekend, the program will be shaped by shooting competitions for the royal title, the parade on Sunday, the king's dinner, and convivial evenings in the festival tent. The funfair with rides and food stalls will provide a Volksfest character.
Neuhaus an der Oste, the historic village in the southern Cuxhaven district, is an attraction for locals and guests from the region during the festival days.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
Schützenplatz in Neuhaus (Oste), 21785, Samtgemeinde Land Hadeln (Cuxhaven district).
By car via the A26 (from Hamburg) or A27/B73 (from Bremerhaven). Neuhaus is located on the banks of the Oste river, well signposted.
