Shooting Tradition in the Heek Hamlets
The Schützenfest Averbeck is one of the annual highlights in the village life of the Averbeck hamlet, which belongs to the municipality of Heek in the western Münsterland. In 2026, the festival of the Schützenverein Averbeck e.V. will take place on Thursday, June 4th, starting at 3:00 PM, until Friday, June 5th, 2026.
The Schirmschoppe as Festival Venue
The venue is the Schirmschoppe Averbeck (Averbeck 105) – the traditional clubhouse and festival grounds of the shooting club. This is where the king's competition, the marquee program, and the club's central ceremonies take place. The typical Münsterland atmosphere of a hamlet festival setting – with farmhouses, wide fields, and the close-knit club structure – shapes the event.
Heek and Münsterland Shooting Culture
Heek is a municipality with around 8,700 inhabitants in the Borken district of North Rhine-Westphalia, located directly on the Dutch border. As in many Münsterland communities, there is a dense network of shooting clubs here – in addition to the Schützenverein Averbeck, other clubs in the districts of Heek, Nienborg, and Ahle maintain their traditions. The Münsterland is considered one of the strongest regions for shooting clubs in Germany; almost every hamlet has its own club with its own Schützenfest.
The Program – King's Competition and Celebration Evening
The two-day festival follows the classic Schützenfest rhythm: assembly of the shooters, king's competition to determine the new king, proclamation, and a celebration evening with dancing in the marquee. Specific program details will be communicated by the club through local channels and the Heek municipal website.
