Indie festival on a farm in the North Hessian highlands
The Musikschutzgebiet, or MSG for short, has been around since 2007 and has earned a special reputation in the German festival scene over nearly two decades: small enough to remain personal (capacity approx. 1,500 visitors), yet programmatically ambitious enough to attract bands that headline larger stages. Self-description: 'North Hesse's festival gem with a knack for tomorrow's favorite bands.'
The venue is Grünhof, an old farmstead in the Falkenberg district, located in the North Hessian highlands between Homberg (Efze) and Kassel. The grounds – including barns, meadows, and a hangar – are transformed into a complete festival landscape once a year: a main open-air stage, a second stage in a hangar (weather protection for opening nights), camping around the farm, a food court, workshop areas, and a space dedicated to the organizers' sustainable philosophy.
MSG resists genre pigeonholing. The 2026 lineup features Sonos Cliq and Team Scheisse at the top (German punk and pop-punk), alongside indie acts like Efeu, Swedish psych-rock from MaidaVale, the Berlin trio Haus F, hip-hop from JBS, the krautrock project Latex, as well as TZK, Fuffifufzich, and Van Holzen. This stylistic range is MSG's hallmark: from melancholic singer-songwriters to hard punk and psychedelic rock numbers.
The festival emphasizes sustainable gastronomy and collaborates with regional partners: Wildes Rotkäppchen (wild game burgers from local hunts), Grün Zeug (vegetarian/vegan), Velocrêpes for the sweet tooths, and the King Schulz Bar for craft cocktails. Reusable packaging, waste separation, and short delivery routes are standard practice.
The weekend ticket includes tent camping. Those arriving by car or campervan must purchase a separate vehicle camping ticket for designated areas. The grounds are mostly grassy and not uniformly flat ('low-barrier access,' as the organizers put it). Children under 14 only with parental supervision; teenagers aged 14-18 have specific stay regulations.
2026 was not a guaranteed festival year for MSG: the organizers openly communicated financial challenges and launched a crowdfunding/advance ticket sale campaign. The weekend ticket in 2026 is priced at €99. The close bond between the festival and its community makes MSG more than just a concert trip for many – it's a place of identification for the North Hessian indie scene.
The 2026 edition is the result of a publicly communicated rescue operation, supported by the community. The festival follows the established four-day format, with arrival and first sets on Thursday, full festival operations from Friday to Saturday, and winding down on Sunday.
