Youth Village Fair
The Brudersdorfer Kirwa is organized by the Catholic Youth Movement (KLJB) Brudersdorf and is the highlight of the year for the small district of Brudersdorf near Nabburg in the Upper Palatinate. The Kirwa (»Kirchweih«) combines the church's patron saint's day, local customs, and community spirit – a central element of local identity in rural Bavaria.
Kirwabaum and Festival
The Kirwa opens on Friday evening with the traditional erection of the Kirwabaum – a decorated tree that stands as a symbol of the festival next to the church tower – followed by a convivial gathering. On Saturday at 6 PM, a festive church service takes place in Brudersdorf's church; afterwards, at 7 PM, the festival begins in the school garden at the Old Schoolhouse with live music (including the Höidlbrummers) and a raffle for the Kirwabaum.
Living Village Community
Although Brudersdorf has only a small church, the residents put a lot of love into the details. The Kirwa impressively demonstrates the residents' attachment to their homeland and their strong sense of community – supported by the volunteer work of the youth group and local associations.
Upper Palatinate Kirwa Culture
In the Upper Palatinate and Franconia, the Kirwa is firmly anchored in the calendar of customs. With its Kirwabaum, festive church service, dancing, and regional catering, the Brudersdorfer Kirwa is a prime example of this vibrant tradition in the Upper Palatinate Forest region, in the district of Schwandorf.
