Oberpfalz Kirwa in the Trisching district of Schmidgaden — since 1980
The Trischinger Kirwa is a prime example of a vibrant Upper Palatinate village Kirwa. Founded in 1980 — on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the local youth brass band — it has become a firm tradition in Trisching's village life. Eight Kirwa couples lead the festival program, with proceeds going towards the maintenance of the village community center.
Trisching is one of the districts of the Upper Palatinate municipality of Schmidgaden in the Schwandorf district (state of Bavaria). The municipality of Schmidgaden has around 4,000 inhabitants and consists of several villages and hamlets; Trisching is one of the traditional villages with a strong club life. The Oberpfalz, that eastern Bavarian sub-state on the border with the Czech Republic, has a particularly strong Kirwa tradition with a distinctive local character.
Three elements characterize every Upper Palatinate Kirwa, including the Trischinger one:
Unlike some Kirwas that are supported by a single association, the Trisching village associations organize the Kirwa together: the youth brass band (whose 10th anniversary in 1980 led to the festival's founding), the sports club, the shooting club, and the fire department. This collective sponsorship is an expression of Trisching's community spirit and has ensured the festival's operation for over four decades.
The first weekend in September is a classic Kirwa date in the northern Oberpfalz. In the weeks before and after, other Kirwas with their own dates take place in the surrounding villages — those who enjoy traveling can experience different Upper Palatinate village Kirwas on consecutive weekends, each with its own choreography and bands.
The 2026 edition of the Trischinger Kirwa follows the proven three-day Upper Palatinate Kirwa program:
The kickoff on Friday, September 4, 2026, is the traditional raising of the Kerwabaum at 3:00 PM by the Trisching lads. At 7:30 PM, the beer tapping follows, accompanied by a band — based on the most recent previous edition, likely the band Rundumadum or a comparable Upper Palatinate dance formation.
On Saturday, September 5, the festival day begins with the evening mass at 6:00 PM in the Trisching St. Mary's Church. In the evening, a dance follows in the festival tent with a live band.
Sunday, September 6, marks the traditional Kirwa highlight: the Baumtanz at 2:30 PM with the eight Kirwa couples around the Kerwabaum; in the afternoon, coffee with musicians from Buchberg-Echo; in the evening, the festival tent; at 8:30 PM, the exciting Kerwabaum raffle, officially concluding the Kirwa year.
