Over 200 years of tradition – a four-day village festival with a funfair, around 30 rides, and historical peasant theatre in Bochum's Harpen district
The Dorffest Harpen boasts a tradition of over 200 years – making it not only one of Bochum's oldest district festivals but also one of the most traditional village and funfair festivals in the Westphalian Ruhr area. The focus is on St. Vinzentius Church, a neoclassical sacred building, and the surrounding historic village centre of Harpen with Kattenstraße and Lütkendorpweg.
The Dorffest Harpen 2026 runs from Friday, August 21st to Monday, August 24th, 2026, around St. Vinzentius Church on Kattenstraße and Lütkendorpweg (44805 Bochum). Opening hours are 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM all four days.
The programme combines a classic funfair with village club culture:
Harpen is a district in the northeast of Bochum, on the border with Werne and Castrop-Rauxel. The historic village centre around St. Vinzentius Church is remarkably well-preserved despite being integrated into a city of 360,000 inhabitants – half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, the church as the centrepiece. This is what makes the Dorffest special: it's not a district festival in an urban pedestrian zone, but a real village funfair – right in the middle of a big city.
St. Vinzentius Church is a Catholic church from the 19th century (neoclassical hall building) and the visual centre of the village festival. The church remains open during the festival and participates with its own programme items – concerts, services, a café in the parish hall. The combination of the funfair right outside the church door and quiet church music inside is a unique experience.
With around 365,000 inhabitants, Bochum is the sixth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is known primarily for its former mining industry, the Bermuda Triangle (gastronomy district in the city centre), and the musical "Starlight Express". District festivals like Dorffest Harpen showcase a different, more village-like face of the city – a sense of home in the structurally transformed Ruhr area.
The 2026 edition of Dorffest Harpen comprises four festival days around St. Vinzentius Church. The organiser is Dorffest Harpen e.V., which has been organising the festival for generations.
Entry to the festival grounds is free. Rides and refreshments are paid for individually, payment is usually cash only.

Come on Monday for Family Day: discounted ride prices and a more relaxed atmosphere than on the weekend. For theatre fans, it's worth checking the festival tent programme – the historical peasant theatre is a specialty of the Harpen village festival and is unique in Bochum.
