Traditional district Christmas market on Alte Salzstraße — 1st Advent Saturday
While many major cities boast a central Christmas market, Hamm in eastern Westphalia has a special tradition: 14 decentralized district Christmas markets in the districts around the city center. One of them — and one of the most atmospheric — is the Rhynern Christmas market on the historic Alte Salzstraße. On Saturday, December 6, 2026, it traditionally opens its doors on the first Advent Saturday.
The Alte Salzstraße in Rhynern is more than just an address: it dates back to a medieval trade route on which salt from the Westphalian saltworks (Werl, Bad Sassendorf, Salzkotten) was transported in all directions. This historic identity gives the Christmas market a special charm — the farm facades, old half-timbered buildings, and the rural atmosphere of Rhynern create a backdrop where a traditional Advent market finds its natural setting.
The organizer is the Gewerbeverband Rhynern (Rhynern Business Association), which brings together local businesses, restaurateurs, and craftspeople. The association has been coordinating the market on a voluntary basis for years — with the aim of promoting identity and community in the district while also making the local economy visible. Most stalls are occupied by Rhynern vendors: bakers, butchers, craftspeople, florists.
The market program follows the proven Christmas market tradition: Glühwein (mulled wine), punch, children's punch, roasted almonds, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and French fries provide culinary delights for visitors. Adventsgestecke (Advent decorations), candles, handmade gifts, ceramics, wool products, and jewelry are offered at the stalls. Throughout the day, there are performances by choirs, church communities, and kindergarten groups — the size of the market (several dozen stalls) allows for a manageable, cozy atmosphere.
Rhynern is a district in the east of Hamm, on the transition to the Soest district. With around 11,000 inhabitants, the district has largely retained its rural character. The parish church of St. Regina (12th century), the historic district center, and the agriculturally influenced surroundings make Rhynern a typical East Westphalian district — rural, rooted in tradition, yet modern and vibrant. The Christmas market perfectly captures this district identity during the Advent season.
Hamm is an independent city in the eastern Ruhr area and at the same time part of Westphalia. With around 180,000 inhabitants, Hamm is an important railway hub (ICE route Cologne-Berlin) and home to historic industrial facilities. The city combines Ruhr industrial culture with Westphalian rurality — the 14 decentralized district Christmas markets are an expression of this special identity.
