Shooting Club Life in Northern Bochum

The Bürgerschützenverein Bochum-Gerthe e.V. has been cultivating the shooting tradition in the northern district of Gerthe for decades. Unlike the flashy, colorful club life of Catholic shooting strongholds, here the sober Ruhr area variant shapes the events: comradely, down-to-earth, sociable togetherness with clear club anchoring. The family festival on the Heinrichstraße meadow is the most important club event of the year.

Program 2026

From Saturday, May 23, to Sunday, May 24, 2026, the meadow will be transformed into a festival ground. Shooting competitions, crowning of the king and queen, family program with children's activities, communal meals, live music, and socializing into the evening. Friendly clubs from the Ruhr area are invited. 2026 is also part of a multi-weekend event with bivouacs in June and July — the shooting season here is long and intense.

Bochum-Gerthe

Gerthe is a district in northern Bochum, manageable with around 13,000 inhabitants, but socially densely networked. Located directly between Castrop-Rauxel and Bochum city center, Gerthe has retained its rural-urban charm. The BSV Gerthe is part of this social fabric — a classic district club that holds the neighborhood together.

Club Life Throughout the Year

The family festival is not the only event in the club calendar. Shooting club excursions, bivouacs, shooting competitions, and club trips characterize the year. The BSV is a member of the Association of Citizens' and Homeland Shooting Clubs in the Ruhr Area and maintains contacts with numerous sister clubs.

Shooting Clubs in the Ruhr Area

Shooting clubs in the Ruhr area often have a different history than those in Westphalia or Rhineland: they were founded in the 19th century by citizens and industrial workers and survived the decline of the coal mines as a social anchor in the district. The BSV Gerthe is a living example of this typical Ruhr area shooting tradition.
