Neighborhood festival in Bochum-Gerthe — arts and crafts, flea market, stage and children's program
Gerthe is a middle-class district in Bochum's north, characterized by post-war residential buildings, a lively pedestrian zone with retail shops, bakeries, cafés, and boutiques, as well as a distinctive marketplace with a market hall. While Bochum-Mitte is defined by the Bermudadreieck and the university, Gerthe has the profile of a classic suburban center with its own identity — and with the Gerther Sommer, an annual neighborhood festival that makes this identity tangible.
The Gerther Sommer is organized by the Bochum-Nord district administration in cooperation with Bochum Marketing GmbH and supported by numerous local players: schools, clubs, retailers, and the club landscape. The concept has been stable for years: one day, one downtown play area, a cross-section of neighborhood culture. Families from Gerthe, Hiltrop, Harpen, and neighboring districts come, as well as Bochum residents from other districts for a weekend outing.
Around 15 artisans present their work on the marketplace: handmade jewelry, decorations, textiles, ceramics, woodwork — not a mass-produced goods market, but a selection of regional producers. A new program line is the flea market, which with around 20 stalls winds through the pedestrian zone on Lothringer Straße and is interesting for bargain hunters, families, and collectors.
A varied program runs on the marketplace stage, supported by local schools, clubs, and artists: school band from the Anne-Frank-Realschule, judo demonstrations, dance groups, theater performances, live music with bands and internationally active musicians. It's the classic neighborhood festival mix: short performances, many participants, an open atmosphere. The City Sports Association brings VR experiences, and a football project offers sports-related activities.
The Market Garden behind the marketplace becomes a children's zone: bouncy castle, face painting, craft and activity stations. There are seating areas nearby for parents. Families from Bochum-Nord use the Gerther Sommer as the kick-off weekend of the summer holidays.
Food trucks and stalls offer grilled items, crêpes, waffles, and drinks. Local shops in the Gerthe city center — hairdressers, fashion stores, cafés, travel agencies — participate with special promotions and usually open their doors on Saturdays. A plant exchange and a book swap complement the offerings.
Bochum-Nord is the district north of the A 40, with the neighborhoods of Gerthe, Hiltrop, Harpen, and Bergen. Visitors to the Gerther Sommer who are not familiar with Bochum can extend their day: Bermudadreieck in the city center for the evening, the German Mining Museum, Zeche Hannover in Hordel, or Tippelsberg as a small hiking hill.
The 2026 edition continues the proven neighborhood festival format: marketplace, pedestrian zone, and Market Garden as three play areas, supported by local schools, clubs, and retailers — the families of Bochum's north meet here.
