Southern Germany's Warmest Wine Region Celebrates
The Markgräflerland stretches south of Freiburg to the Swiss border — one of Germany's warmest regions and home to Gutedel, the most important white grape variety in the area. In Staufen im Breisgau, a medieval small town at the foot of the Black Forest, winemakers and wine lovers of the Markgräflerland have been gathering for their wine festival since 1954. Since 1973, Alfred-Schladerer-Platz in Staufen's town center has been the permanent venue — an open square that transforms into an open-air wine bar for four days.
Over 300 Wines in One Place
26 wineries and wine cooperatives from the Markgräflerland — from Heitersheim and Auggen to Müllheim and Schliengen, and all the way to Efringen-Kirchen on the Swiss border — set up their stalls around the square. The entire spectrum of grape varieties is represented: over 50 Gutedel wines in all quality levels from Kabinett to dry top wines, plus Spätburgunder as the regional red wine star, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Schwarzriesling, premium cuvées, and wines across all quality levels from QbA to Eiswein. In addition, there are more than 50 sparkling wines and brandies.
Four Days, Friday to Monday
The Markgräfler Weinfest 2026 is open for four days, daily from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM — from Friday, July 31, to Monday, August 3. The format is deliberately open-air and focused on enjoyment: there's no classic stage marathon, but rather live music in the background, culinary specialties from Markgräfler gastronomy, and above all, plenty of space for conversations between winemakers and the public. Anyone who wants to get to know the Markgräfler style is in the right place here — most winemakers stand behind their own stalls.
Staufen — Half-Timbered Houses and Faust
Staufen im Breisgau, with around 8,000 inhabitants, is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in Southern Baden. The town became famous through the legend of the death of the alchemist Doctor Faust in 1539 at the inn "Zum Löwen," right on the market square. The wine festival takes place just a few steps away, combining wine enjoyment, medieval flair, and Black Forest scenery.
