August opens in Rhineland-Palatinate with one of the busiest weekends of the year. On a decommissioned missile base in the Hunsrück hills, Nature One celebrates its 30th anniversary. At the same time, jugglers and acrobats take over Ehrenbreitstein Fortress above Koblenz.
In between there is a firework display over the Rhine and a medieval market on a Moselle castle. Rhenish Hesse adds a wine festival with a Ferris wheel. Readers rather than dancers have a literary festival in Saarburg, held for the first time on Sunday. Techno on concrete, or readings in an old foundry?

Nature One at 30: techno on a decommissioned missile base
From July 30 to August 2, 2026, the former US nuclear missile base Pydna near Kastellaun turns into a dance floor again. Nature One marks its 30th anniversary in 2026 and ranks among Europe's largest open-air rave festivals.
More than 60,000 visitors from around the world are expected across four days and three nights. Over 350 artists play on 20 floors.
Half the appeal is the site itself. Where else do you dance on concrete aprons built for the Cold War? The bunkers now carry sound systems. Saturday and Sunday form the back half of this anniversary edition.
GAUKLERFESTung Koblenz: 150 performers take Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
For three days, from July 31 to August 2, 2026, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress high above Koblenz becomes a stage for variety arts. The GAUKLERFESTung reaches its 35th edition.
More than 150 performers from over twenty countries fill the courtyards and plateaus: jugglers, acrobats, comedians, magicians, mime artists and walk-act performers. It is considered one of the largest festivals of its kind in Germany.
There are no assigned seats here. You walk the grounds and the programme comes to you.
Da Capo Open Air Alzey: Paul Young plays his only German date
The courtyard of Alzey Castle hosts the Da Capo Open Air Festival from July 30 to August 2, 2026. It is the town's most ambitious summer concert format, with four consecutive evenings, each with its own line-up.
On Saturday, August 1, international star Paul Young takes the stage. It is his only German appearance in 2026. Thursday brought comedy from Chako Habekost, Friday electropop from ClockClock.
The historic courtyard gives the evening the feel of a chamber concert rather than a festival field.
Idar-Oberstein: fifty gem cutters working in the open air
On August 1 and 2, 2026, the pedestrian zone of Oberstein becomes an open workshop. At the German Gem Cutter and Goldsmith Market, around fifty artisans from across Germany demonstrate their craft. Trades such as gem cutting, silversmithing, goldsmithing and jewellery design are all represented.
They work at the foot of the Felsenkirche, the rock church that is the town's landmark. A street theatre festival with international performers runs alongside.
Idar-Oberstein has lived off stone for centuries. Here you see not the finished piece in a display case, but the hands that make it.
Castle festival at Reichsburg Cochem: a medieval market above the Moselle
On August 1 and 2, 2026, Reichsburg Cochem turns into a medieval market. Knights, jesters, minstrels and craftspeople take over the inner courtyards and battlements.
More than twenty stalls, a show stage, a combat arena and several food stations spread across the site. The castle sits high above the Moselle and supplies the backdrop for free.
For families it is one of the easiest options of the weekend: short distances, plenty to see, and a setting children grasp immediately.
Festival of a Thousand Lights, Andernach: fireworks over the Rhine on Saturday night
On July 31 and August 1, 2026, the riverside gardens of Andernach become a festival mile. The Fest der 1000 Lichter is among the most spectacular summer firework displays on the Middle Rhine.
Live music and food stalls carry both evenings. The high point falls on Saturday: the main display goes up over the Rhine at around 10.30pm. The organiser is the Andernach tourism and civic association.
Only one evening to spare? Take Saturday. By Sunday the festival is over.
SchlabbeflickerFestival Pirmasens: 60 hours of live music, admission free
From July 31 to August 2, 2026, the town centre of Pirmasens turns into an open-air stage. The SchlabbeflickerFestival is the big free city festival of Germany's shoemaking town.
Three stages carry more than 60 hours of live music, alongside extras such as art performances and hands-on activities. Thousands of visitors from across the region gather over the weekend. A musical highlight with fireworks closes the programme.
The name nods to the cobbler's trade that made Pirmasens. The festival itself long ago outgrew that origin.
Nierstein wine festival: water jousting and a Ferris wheel by the Roter Hang
From July 31 to August 3, 2026, Nierstein celebrates for four days. The Niersteiner Winzerfest is regarded as the largest wine festival between Mainz and Worms.
Wine booths, wine taverns, live music, children's attractions and a Ferris wheel fill the festival ground. The legendary high point is the Wasserstechen, the traditional water jousting.
Nierstein is one of Germany's best-known wine villages and home to the Roter Hang slope. Anyone who wants to understand Rhenish Hesse in a glass is in the right place.
Roman Life in Trier: cooking from Apicius at the World Heritage sites
On August 1 and 2, 2026, Roman Life 2026 — Food & Drink gives the weekend over to the Roman table. The setting is Trier's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Reenactors and specialists in ancient food culture stage cooking demonstrations based on Apicius. On the table, dishes such as garum, the Roman fish sauce. Alongside it, bread, cheese, honey pastries, wine and mulsum, the spiced wine. Tastings are part of the day.
The series run by the regional heritage authority gives each weekend its own theme. This one is the edible chapter.
Leutesdorf wine picnic: a table several hundred metres long
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, a table several hundred metres long is set up on the plane-tree avenue in Leutesdorf. It runs from 3pm to 11pm. The wine picnic Tafeln am Strom is held every year on the first Saturday in August.
The Leutesdorf WeinSTEIG winegrowers serve their Rieslings. The Rhine runs right alongside.
It counts as one of the most atmospheric summer wine formats on the Romantic Rhine, and it is the opposite of a loud beer tent.
First Saarburg literature festival: readings in a former bell foundry
On Sunday, August 2, 2026, the 1st Saarburg Literature Festival opens for the first time. The venue is the Kulturgießerei Saarburg, the former Mabilon bell foundry.
Across three stages, authors read from crime fiction, novels and non-fiction. The line-up includes Birgit Herold, Annie Stone, Moselle crime writer Ansgar Sittmann and Werner Giesser. A book exchange, a cocktail bar and regional food round out the day.
A first edition inside an industrial hall: the setting fits the occasion.
Open-air cinema Frankenthal: a 70-square-metre screen in a monastery ruin
The open-air cinema in the Erkenbert ruin on Frankenthal's Kornmarkt runs until August 3, 2026. Since July 23, eleven film nights have played out inside the medieval monastery ruin.
A 70-square-metre screen with HD projection stands between the old walls. The organiser is Lux Kinos, working with the town of Frankenthal.
This weekend brings some of the final dates of the 2026 edition. For anyone who would rather sit than dance in high summer, this is the quietest option on the list.
