Largest Wine Festival between Mainz and Worms in the Riesling High Ground of Nierstein on the Red Slope
Nierstein, on the left bank of the Rhine south of Mainz, is one of Germany's most famous wine-growing communities. The Roter Hang (Red Slope) – that striking steep face of red marl slate stretching from Nierstein to Nackenheim – produces some of Germany's best Rieslings and has established Nierstein's reputation as the Riesling high ground of Rheinhessen. Sites like Pettenthal, Hipping, Brudersberg, Oelberg, and Orbel are among the classified top sites and are cultivated by numerous renowned wineries – including several VDP members.
The Niersteiner Winzerfest (Nierstein Wine Festival) is the largest wine festival between Mainz and Worms and one of the most traditional folk festivals in Rheinhessen. From July 31st to August 3rd, 2026, the Nierstein festival grounds will transform into a folk festival area with wine stands, wine taverns, amusement rides, and music stages for four days.
The focus is on the Nierstein vintners with their current vintages: Riesling from the Roter Hang in its best styles – from estate wines to village wines, first growths, and Grand Cru equivalents ('Große Gewächse') – as well as Pinot Noir, Frühburgunder, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, Rosé, and Sekt (sparkling wine). The wines are served in tasting glasses, and a wine token system simplifies payment.
The legendary highlight is the Wasserstechen (water jousting) – a traditional boat tournament on the Rhine where Nierstein teams try to push each other off their wobbly boats with long poles. Whoever falls into the water is out; the last ones standing win. This custom has been cherished in Nierstein for decades and attracts thousands of spectators who follow the spectacle from the Rhine meadows.
In addition, the Ferris wheel, classic amusement rides (bumper cars, carousels, children's carousels, ring toss stalls), raffles, and candy stalls contribute to the folk festival atmosphere. The culinary offerings include Rhenish-Hessian specialties: Spundekäs (cheese dip), Handkäs mit Musik (marinated cheese with onions), bratwurst, steaks, tarte flambée, homemade salads, fries, and, depending on the day, specialities from local clubs.
Live music is featured on several stages with bands, dance orchestras, cover bands, and acoustic acts. The Niersteiner Winzerfest is a folk festival with deep regional roots – supported by the Nierstein Tourist Association and a variety of local clubs.
The 2026 edition follows the proven concept of the Nierstein Wine Festival: four days of folk festival with top-quality wine, live music, and the legendary Wasserstechen on the Rhine. The Nierstein vintners present their current vintages with a focus on Riesling from the Roter Hang.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the Nierstein Tourist Association in good time. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
