Biennial at the harbour basin β on land and water, with 270,000 visitors, one of Frankfurt's largest city festivals
The Osthafen-Festival Frankfurt is one of the most extraordinary festival concepts in the Rhine-Main region: Every two years, the Frankfurter Osthafen β an actively operated industrial harbour on the Main river, normally strictly cordoned off β opens its gates to the public. The result is a festival that, in the truest sense of the word, could take place nowhere else: live stages in front of harbour cranes, DJ sets in old warehouses, bands on the water, family activities among shipping containers.
The last edition in 2024 attracted over 270,000 visitors in two days, a figure that elevates the Osthafen-Festival to the same league as Frankfurt's largest city festivals (Mainfest, Museumsuferfest, Schweizer StraΓenfest). Unlike these, however, admission is completely free, and the concept is not a classic row of catering stands + stage, but program-oriented with a clear three-axis architecture.
The festival is conceptually divided into:
The transitions are fluid: you walk from one stage to the next between containers, past a water activity, can relax by the harbour basin, or take a boat trip through the harbour area. The historic Frankfurt railway operates a steam locomotive into the festival grounds, old trams shuttle back and forth, and a ferry connects the harbour side with the Main riverbank.
Despite the harbour backdrop, the Osthafen-Festival is extremely family-friendly. In 2024, there were two kids' areas with a children's disco, children's theatre, climbing tower, and paddling pool. This is highly likely to be the case again in 2026 β the family axis is a hallmark of the festival.
The visual highlight is the illuminated ship parade on Saturday evening: Boats β commercial ships from the harbour operations, yachts, sports boats, creatively illuminated custom-built vessels β enter the harbour basin, are illuminated by spotlights, and some owners have prepared light installations. The ships are introduced via loudspeaker. One of Germany's most unusual festival choreographies.
The Osthafen is Frankfurt's largest and oldest industrial harbour, located east of the city centre on the right bank of the Main river. This is where container and bulk cargo ships arrive and depart; this is where the cranes, warehouses, and historic harbour buildings stand. The area borders the Ostend district and the ECB. The festival's Frankfurt identity is fuelled by this industrial-maritime background β not a touristy harbour cinema, but a real workplace that becomes a festival stage for 48 hours.
Two days of harbour festival in the active industrial harbour. The exact artist lineup and detailed schedule will be published in Spring/Summer 2026 on osthafenfestival.de. Many visitors will arrive via the historic Frankfurt railway (steam locomotive special trips to the festival grounds) and via a specially set-up ferry.
Admission is completely free. Payment at the catering stands.
By U-Bahn (subway): U6 or U7 to Ostbahnhof, then a 10-minute walk to the festival grounds. By Tram: Line 11 to Ostbahnhof. By Car: Strongly discouraged β hardly any parking available at the festival site. By Boat: Ferry from the Main riverbank (set up during the festival). By Historic Frankfurt Railway: Special trips into the festival grounds.
Admission is completely free. Payment at the catering stands and for any boat trips.
Family Tip: Saturday or Sunday afternoon with the Kids' Area. Concert Tip: Saturday evening with the main stage program. Visual Tip: Stand by the water's edge on Saturday evening for the illuminated ship parade. Early Bird Tip: Sunday morning with fewer crowds and a relaxed harbour tour.
