Frankfurt's smaller sister festival to the Spring Fair at Festplatz Ratsweg
The Herbst-Dippemess is the smaller sister of the world-famous Frankfurter Frühjahrsmess – together they form Frankfurt's most important folk festival tradition. While the spring edition attracts hundreds of thousands over three weeks, the autumn edition offers the same range of rides, showmen, and Frankfurt gastronomy in a shorter and more compact format.
The venue for decades has been the Festplatz am Ratsweg in Ostend – a 100,000 m² site near the ice rink. Its location directly on subway line U7 makes the festival grounds easily accessible even without a car.
Frankfurt specialties are as much a part of the Dippemess as pretzels are to Munich's Oktoberfest: Eppelwoi (apple wine) served in a 'Bembel', Frankfurt sausages, candied almonds, Schmalzbrot (lard bread), and cotton candy. If you want to experience Frankfurt's culinary side, the festival grounds are the right place.
From Break Dance by Schramm to the Ferris wheel, Wave Flyer, bumper cars, and family carousels – the Herbst-Dippemess relies on proven classics. Even if the spectacle is smaller than in spring: the atmosphere is guaranteed.
The Dippemess is one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany – first documented in 1325. Originally, it was a pottery market ('Dippe' = pot in the Frankfurt dialect), from which the current folk festival developed. It is held twice a year: in spring and autumn.
While the Spring Fair focuses on maximum hustle and bustle, the Herbst-Dippemess is considered the more relaxed date in Frankfurt's funfair double-header. The festival grounds are smaller, the density of showmen is more manageable, and the family day on Tuesdays offers particularly favorable conditions for parents with children. Eppelwoi and Schmalzbrot remain just as authentic as in April – just without the crowds of the Main Festival in the background.
The Herbst-Dippemess runs from September 11 to 27, 2026, at the 100,000 m² Festplatz am Ratsweg. Showmen like Break Dance by Schramm are announced; the full lineup will be communicated before the event begins.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Rides and food at usual funfair prices. Family Day discounts on Tuesdays from 3 PM to 8 PM.
By subway: U7 to Eissporthalle/Festplatz. By bus: Lines 38 and 103 to Festplatz. By tram: Line 12. By car: Limited parking – public transport recommended.
Mon closed. Tue–Thu 3:00 PM–11:00 PM. Fri–Sat 2:00 PM–12:00 AM. Sun 12:00 PM–11:00 PM. Family Day every Tuesday 3:00 PM–8:00 PM with reduced prices.
Weekdays are more relaxed, weekends are full of atmosphere. Families benefit from the affordable Tuesday rates.
