100 exhibitors, arts and crafts, and stage program around the monastery
Frenswegen Monastery boasts a history of over 600 years and now serves as an ecumenical conference center with a historic park. The old monastery complex, its courtyard, and the surrounding meadows form a tranquil, established setting where the Klostermarkt unfolds with its approximately 100 exhibitors. Unlike many city markets, the atmosphere is paramount here: well-maintained paths, large trees, historic walls, and the monastery church shape the festive scene.
The offerings range from turned and crafted pottery to glasswork, handmade jewelry, and textiles, as well as natural cosmetics, jams, syrups, and herbal products. Plant stalls featuring perennials, herbs, and seasonal flowers complement the assortment, adding a botanical touch to the market's operations.
A small stage in the monastery courtyard continuously presents a varied program: music groups, soloists, theatrical performances, and readings alternate. For children, there is a dedicated activity area with a carousel, petting zoo, and face painting. This significantly enhances the market's family-friendliness, distinguishing it from purely adult-oriented craft markets.
Admission is 3 Euros for adults; children are free. The market runs on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., making it ideal for a compact day trip. Access is via Nordhorn or the A 31 motorway; designated parking is available along the access road.
The monastery hosts several markets, concerts, and cultural events throughout the year. The 'Fest der Kulturen' (Festival of Cultures) in summer complements the Klostermarkt with another major event, making the monastery complex a central cultural hub in the Grafschaft Bentheim region.
The compact, one-day market character is the hallmark of this event. Those planning a day trip can leisurely browse all the stalls on Saturday, follow the stage program, and explore the monastery park.
Unlike many city markets, the Klostermarkt thrives on its atmosphere. The tranquil location, the historic substance, and the well-kept park grounds create a setting that is worth the visit in itself.
