The Riederwald – Frankfurt's Eastern Housing Estate
The Riederwald is located in the east of Frankfurt, east of Friedberger Landstraße, nestled between Bornheim and Fechenheim. The housing estate was built in the 1920s as one of Frankfurt's early social housing projects under city planning director Ernst May – featuring characteristic terraced houses in brick architecture, spacious green areas, and a sense of neighborhood identity that is still palpable today.
10 Years of Neighborhood Festival
Since 2016, Die Linke and its local groups from Frankfurt-East have been organizing an annual neighborhood festival in the Riederwald. The 10th edition will take place on Saturday, May 9th, 2026. The concept combines the classic neighborhood festival with political local work: live music meets information booths, flea market meets discussion rounds, bratwurst meets children's program.
Live Music from Afternoon to Evening
The stage program begins at 3:00 PM and typically runs into the evening. Following the pattern of previous years:
- Afternoon (3:30 PM) — School band or regional beginner acts
- Early Evening (6:00 PM) — Jazz set
- Late Evening (8:00 PM) — Blues band with dancing
Political Component
Unlike most neighborhood festivals, the Riederwald festival also has a political dimension: information booths provide insights from Die Linke's district factions on current neighborhood issues – rent development, traffic, schools, childcare. Discussion rounds with local politicians and activists complement the program. Anyone wanting to get to know the political climate in Frankfurt-East is in the right place.
Children's Program and Flea Market
For families, there is a children's program with hands-on activities, games, and craft stations. Alongside this, a flea market takes place where residents offer their items – an important part of the neighborhood character of this festival.
Free and for Everyone
Admission is free. Food and drinks are available at snack stands at usual festival prices. The festival is financed by donations and the own resources of Die Linke's local groups.
