The Open-Air Cinema in the Erkenbertruine Frankenthal presents eleven film evenings under the open sky from July 23 to August 3, 2026, in the historic cloister ruins at Kornmarkt. A 70 square meter screen with HD projection transforms the medieval backdrop into an open-air cinema hall with an unparalleled atmosphere. The event is organized by Lux Kinos in cooperation with the city of Frankenthal.
The 2026 program includes current audience favorites such as VOILÀ PAPA !, Lilo & Stitch, Conclave, The Salt Path, Bridget Jones — Crazy for Him, Better Man (Robbie Williams), and F1, as well as other highlights. Admission is charged.
Open-air cinemas have found a growing following in Germany. What began as a summer alternative to the air-conditioned multiplex has now become a distinct cinematic format, combining the film experience with the special atmosphere of a balmy summer evening. The Erkenbertruine Frankenthal offers an extraordinary setting for such an event.
The Erkenbertruine is the picturesque cloister ruins of a medieval Augustinian hermitage founded in 1119. The still-standing walls, arches, and remnants of the monastic complex form a spectacular backdrop that makes every film evening a visual experience – even before the first frame appears on the screen.
Lux Kinos installs a 70 square meter screen with professional HD projection for the open-air cinema. The image quality is comparable to that of a regular cinema, and the acoustics are supported by a high-quality sound system. Seating is provided – usually folding chairs or beer bench sets – and blankets are recommended for cooler evenings.
The program includes current audience favorites and highlights from the 2025/2026 cinema year:
Additional films will be added by the organizer – the program will be finalized in the spring.
Before and during the film screening, a small snack and drink area offers snacks and beverages. The atmosphere is relaxed, convivial, and family-friendly. As dusk falls – film start usually at 9:30 PM – the historic setting enhances the magic of the open-air experience.
The open-air cinema has been a firm fixture in Frankenthal's summer program for years and has become a crowd-puller. Tickets should be secured in advance, as popular film evenings often sell out.
