18th Thuringian Ceramics Market in Glücksburg Castle Courtyard — around 50 potters from all over Germany
Römhild is a town in the Hildburghausen district in southern Thuringia, at the foot of the Gleichberge hills. For centuries, the region has been one of the centers of Central German pottery — the famous "Römhilder Steinzeug" (Römhild stoneware) was highly valued far beyond the borders of Thuringia. Today, the town actively continues this tradition: the "International Ceramics Symposium" (every few years) brings potters from all over the world to Römhild, the continuously running "Ceramic City Program" nurtures local substance, and the annual ceramics market provides the sales platform for regional and supra-regional production.
The venue is Glücksburg Castle in Römhild — a late Baroque palace complex on the outskirts of town, which today houses the Castle Museum. The romantic castle courtyards — enclosed, framed by old walls, with a fountain in the center — form an extraordinary backdrop for the ceramics market. Unlike ceramics markets in public town spaces, this creates a concentrated, almost intimate atmosphere: visitors stroll through the courtyards, see the potters at work (many give demonstrations on potter's wheels), and can talk to the artists in peace.
The limitation to around 50 stalls is a deliberate quality filter. Applicants are selected for artistic quality by the Förderverein Internationales Keramiksymposium Römhild e.V. (Association for the International Ceramics Symposium Römhild) — not everyone who produces ceramics is admitted. The range includes traditional functional ceramics (bowls, cups, plates, jugs), decorative pieces (sculptures, vases), ceramic jewelry, and small art objects. Various styles are represented — from traditional salt glazing and Raku techniques to contemporary studio ceramics.
Several potters work on mobile potter's wheels during the market — visitors can follow the creation process directly. Children can often lend a hand and try making small pieces themselves on a wheel. This workshop atmosphere makes the ceramics market more than just a sales event: it is a direct insight into the pottery craft.
The organizer is the Förderverein Internationales Keramiksymposium Römhild e.V. — a dedicated association that has been nurturing the town's ceramic identity for decades. In addition to the annual market, the association organizes the major International Ceramics Symposium (every three to four years), which brings together potters from all over the world to work in Römhild. The proceeds from the symposium market flow into the association's work.
Two festive days of pottery and ceramics in the romantic castle courtyards of Glücksburg Castle in the pottery town of Römhild. Around 50 selected potters and ceramic artists from all over Germany present their work — from traditional functional ceramics to contemporary studio ceramics. The limitation to 50 stalls is a deliberate quality filter — the market focuses on top handicraft and artistic quality, not mass offerings.
Several exhibitors work on mobile potter's wheels during the market, demonstrating pottery live. This workshop atmosphere makes the market a direct insight into the pottery craft and one of the most extraordinary ceramics markets in Central Germany.
