Christmas market on the second weekend of Advent in Glücksburg Castle — December 5/6, 2026
Römhild is located in the south of the Hildburghausen district, not far from the Bavarian border, in the Grabfeld region. The town, with around 6,000 inhabitants, looks back on a rich history: it was once the residential town of the Counts of Henneberg. The landmark is Glücksburg Castle — a Renaissance castle from the 16th century with a castle courtyard, moats, and a baroque garden. Today, it houses a museum, event spaces, and is the venue for the annual Castle Christmas.
What sets the Römhild Castle Christmas apart from other Christmas markets is its unique setting: The Renaissance castle with its defensive towers, the central courtyard, and the historic interiors create an atmosphere that cannot be artificially replicated. Lovingly decorated market stalls line the courtyard and the atelier. Vendors from the region present arts and crafts: wooden figures from the Thuringian Forest, ceramics, jewelry, felt work, artistic baked goods, regional specialties such as Thuringian bratwurst and mulled wine.
A highlight for families is the Christmas bakery for children: Young visitors can bake and decorate cookies under supervision — a tradition that has shaped the festival for years. The mayor reads from Christmas stories. Festive concerts by the Thuringian Court Musicians fill the castle rooms with baroque and pre-Christmas music. On Sunday at 5:00 PM, Santa Claus arrives and distributes gifts — parents can drop them off at the town hall by Friday morning.
The Römhild Castle Christmas is part of a dense Advent market landscape in the Hildburghausen district and in Southern Thuringia's Grabfeld. With its historic setting, relatively manageable size, and family-friendly character, it is an alternative to the large city Christmas markets, such as those in Erfurt or Nuremberg. Visitors come from the region between Coburg (Bavaria), Suhl, Meiningen, and Hildburghausen — many combine their market visit with a hike on the Großer Gleichberg.
The 2026 date and program structure follow proven tradition: Saturday evening offers mulled wine, bratwurst, and festive music in the unique atmosphere of the castle courtyard, while Sunday is a market Sunday with arts and crafts, family activities, and a highlight in the afternoon. Lovingly decorated stalls line the atelier and the central castle courtyard. The town of Römhild and Glücksburg Castle coordinate the program together with local associations.
