Tradition and Innovation in Southern Thuringia

Römhild has become a centre for experimental ceramics in the 21st century. The International Ceramics Symposium, supported by the Förderverein Internationales Keramiksymposium Römhild e.V. (Association for the Support of the International Ceramics Symposium Römhild), takes place every few years and is one of the most prestigious platforms for contemporary ceramic art in Europe.

Glücksburg Castle – Museum and Studio

The venue is Glücksburg Castle in the Henneberg homeland. It houses the Ceramics Museum with a permanent exhibition of the most important works from past symposia. During the symposium, studios are set up where the selected artists work on-site.

«Metamorphosis – Ceramics in the Change of Cultures»

The 2026 theme addresses transformation – as a material (from raw mass to fired work), as a culture (changes in styles, applications, symbolism), and as a social phenomenon. Experimental work and expanded forms of expression, especially in sculpture and plastic arts, are explicitly encouraged.

Eight Artists, Four Weeks, One Exhibition

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of eight artists. A jury of experts selected them from applications submitted by September 30th, 2025. During the working phase, the artists receive a working grant of €2,000 and free accommodation with breakfast. All works will be publicly presented, documented, and published in a catalogue; selected works will remain in the museum's permanent exhibition.
