Kirchweih in the Grabfeld
The Kirchweih Obereßfeld is the annual main Kirchweih of the Obereßfeld district of the municipality Sulzdorf a.d.Lederhecke in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld. The Grabfeld is the easternmost region of Lower Franconia, on the border with Thuringia, and culturally belongs to the Franconian Kirchweih tradition: each district celebrates its own patron saint's day, which is celebrated as Kirchweih throughout the summer and autumn.
Program and Schedule
The organizers are the Obereßfeld local associations – usually the fire brigade, sports club, music club, and church community working together. The classic Franconian Kirchweih program includes a festive church service, raising the decorated Kirchweih tree, beer service, live music with brass bands, Franconian tavern cuisine (sausages, pork shoulder, sauerkraut), and convivial evenings in the festival tent or community hall.
