Founding celebration of the Ried Volunteer Fire Brigade in the district of Jettingen-Scheppach, Günzburg district
When a Bavarian volunteer fire brigade celebrates its 150th anniversary, it's rarely just an internal club matter — it's an occasion for the whole village to come together. The FFW Ried, founded in 1876, is one of the oldest clubs in the Ried district of the market town of Jettingen-Scheppach. The anniversary festival on Sunday, June 7, 2026, starts at 9:00 AM around the fire station on Hauptstraße 339 and is open as a day event for the entire population of the region.
Ried is located in the Mindeltal valley in the Günzburg district, one of the twelve districts of the administrative region of Swabia in Bavaria. The market town of Jettingen-Scheppach, with its approximately 7,000 inhabitants, is located on the A8 autobahn between Augsburg and Ulm; the Ried district is one of several villages grouped around the historic core settlement. The fire brigade here — as in countless Bavarian villages — is the central pillar of club life, alongside the parish, sports club, and music band.
The structure of such a festival follows a long Swabian-Bavarian tradition: a celebratory church service in the morning, followed by a formal ceremony with guests of honor from the market town and district, performances by friendly neighboring brigades, and the local music band. After the official part, the festival catering takes over with Bavarian culinary delights, beer, coffee, and cake from the club families' kitchens. Throughout the day, the fire station, historical and modern emergency vehicles, and an exhibition on the history of the brigade can be visited.
The FFW Ried is currently led by 1st Commander Henning Zobel. Like all Bavarian fire brigades, the brigade is part of the Günzburg District Fire Brigade Association and the Middle Swabia inspection. The brigade serves the district and adjacent roads, including sections of the A8, together with the neighboring brigades of the market town of Jettingen-Scheppach.
The anniversary festival starts at 9:00 AM at the Ried fire station, Hauptstr. 339. As is customary at Bavarian fire brigade anniversaries, the day typically begins with a procession and a celebratory church service, followed by the official ceremony in the morning with speeches by dignitaries and honors for deserving members.
