35 years of piano festival at the highest international level

The Ruhr Piano Festival was founded in 1989 and is now one of the world's most important piano festivals. It is the cultural flagship of the Initiativkreis Ruhr and is primarily supported by duisport, NRW.Bank, and the Regionalverband Ruhr. In 2026, the festival runs from May 7 to July 21 with 72 concerts in 17 Ruhr cities — a unique format that turns the entire metropolitan region into a concert hall.

Artistic Focus: Béla Bartók

The thematic focus in 2026 is on Béla Bartók under the motto "Time for Bartók". The centerpiece is the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion — one of the monumental chamber music works of the 20th century. Lucas and Arthur Jussen will perform this work together with percussionists at the end of May. Further Bartók programs will be spread throughout the festival duration.

International Top Pianists

The 2026 artist lineup brings together the absolute top tier of the international piano world:

  • Krystian Zimerman — Polish exceptional pianist, Chopin specialist
  • Seong-Jin Cho — Chopin Competition winner 2015, Deutsche Grammophon
  • Grigory Sokolov — the discreet Russian with cult status
  • Sir Stephen Hough — British pianist and composer, with Beethoven and Schumann at Zeche Zollverein
  • Piotr Anderszewski — Beethoven and Bach specialist
  • Kristian Bezuidenhout — fortepiano specialist, chamber concerts
  • Lucas and Arthur Jussen — Dutch piano duo brothers, Bartók focus
  • Matthias Kirschnereit — Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Bruckner rarities in Schwelm
  • Michael Wollny and Nils Landgren — Jazz crossover on May 20

17 Venues — from Industrial Monuments to the Philharmonie

The festival utilizes the unusual diversity of Ruhr venues:

  • Philharmonie Mercatorhalle Duisburg — neoclassical concert hall
  • Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr in Bochum
  • Philharmonie Essen
  • Zeche Zollverein in Essen — UNESCO World Heritage site, industrial monument
  • Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord — former steelworks, now event site
  • Smaller concert halls and churches in Schwelm, Hattingen, Mülheim, Gladbeck, among others

Education Program since 2007

In addition to concerts, the festival runs an award-winning Education Program: Since 2007, the activities have reached over 1,100 young people annually — with a focus on disadvantaged districts such as Duisburg-Marxloh and Bochum-Gerthe. Music, dance, and other artistic expressions are used to foster creativity and social skills.

Ruhr Area — High Culture in the "Pott"

The Ruhr Area in North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's largest conurbation with over 5 million inhabitants. The Piano Festival is part of a dense cultural network — alongside the Ruhrtriennale, the Piano Festival, the European Capital of Culture activities (Essen 2010), and the major philharmonic orchestras, the festival is part of the region's DNA. 35,000 to 40,000 concert visitors per year make it one of the largest piano festivals worldwide.
