One of the world's most important piano festivals — 72 concerts in 17 Ruhr cities, focus Béla Bartók
The Ruhr Piano Festival was founded in 1989 and is now one of the world's most important piano festivals. It is the cultural flagship of the Initiativkreis Ruhr and is primarily supported by duisport, NRW.Bank, and the Regionalverband Ruhr. In 2026, the festival runs from May 7 to July 21 with 72 concerts in 17 Ruhr cities — a unique format that turns the entire metropolitan region into a concert hall.
The thematic focus in 2026 is on Béla Bartók under the motto "Time for Bartók". The centerpiece is the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion — one of the monumental chamber music works of the 20th century. Lucas and Arthur Jussen will perform this work together with percussionists at the end of May. Further Bartók programs will be spread throughout the festival duration.
The 2026 artist lineup brings together the absolute top tier of the international piano world:
The festival utilizes the unusual diversity of Ruhr venues:
In addition to concerts, the festival runs an award-winning Education Program: Since 2007, the activities have reached over 1,100 young people annually — with a focus on disadvantaged districts such as Duisburg-Marxloh and Bochum-Gerthe. Music, dance, and other artistic expressions are used to foster creativity and social skills.
The Ruhr Area in North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's largest conurbation with over 5 million inhabitants. The Piano Festival is part of a dense cultural network — alongside the Ruhrtriennale, the Piano Festival, the European Capital of Culture activities (Essen 2010), and the major philharmonic orchestras, the festival is part of the region's DNA. 35,000 to 40,000 concert visitors per year make it one of the largest piano festivals worldwide.
The 2026 edition brings together international top artists, a Bartók focus, and the unique "Festival across the Ruhr Area" format — from Duisburg through Essen, Bochum, and Dortmund to Schwelm and Hattingen. 35,000 to 40,000 visitors are expected.

The festival rewards multiple visits. Those planning several concerts should combine programs at different venues — for example, the Mercatorhalle in Duisburg, the Brost Musikforum in Bochum, and a concert at Zeche Zollverein. Industrial architecture and piano concerts complement each other magically. Contact: [email protected].
