The colourful spring market in Duisburg city centre with farmers' market, stage and family programme
On an April Sunday, the entire city centre of Duisburg transforms into an experience mile. From Averdunk to Steinschen Gasse, market stalls, stage shows, children's activities, and sports events line up. The Spring Festival is considered the kick-off of the open-air season in the Ruhr area and attracts a broad audience from Duisburg, the Lower Rhine, and the western Ruhr area every year.
The heart of the festival is the large farmers' market with around 70 stalls, stretching to the Lifesaver fountain. Here you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, regional baked goods, honey, sausage and cheese specialities, as well as olive oils, dried fruits, and seasonal dishes for immediate consumption. Artisans present silk flowers, upcycled products, and handmade jewellery.
At König-Heinrich-Platz, Basket Duisburg is hosting a 3x3 basketball tournament. On Averdunk-Platz, a large bouncy castle, a maze, and the science mobile from the University of Duisburg-Essen with hands-on experiments await. The open-air stage presents bubble shows, clown circus, princess appearances, and magic.
In the "Weiberkram & Kinderkram" (Women's Stuff & Kids' Stuff) area, you'll find second-hand fashion, accessories, toys, and children's items from private sellers. There are also workshops with potters and a children's circus ring – ideal for families with children.
Street food stalls offer grilled specialities, Italian pasta, fish, and the obligatory currywurst. Crêpes, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic refreshments complete the offering.
The Spring Festival coincides with the Sunday with open shops in Duisburg: from 1 PM to 6 PM, the city centre shops open their doors, complementing the market activities.
Duisburg is the city of heavy industry, the inland port, and inner transformation. In the Ruhr area, it is the western gateway and is geographically shaped by the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. The Spring Festival symbolically marks the start of a whole series of major city centre events organised annually by Duisburg Kontor GmbH.
The 2026 edition is significantly expanded: the farmers' market extends to the Lifesaver fountain, newly added are the science mobile from the University of Duisburg-Essen, the "Weiberkram" second-hand fashion market, and additional hands-on stations such as pottery and a children's circus ring.
On the open-air stage, bubble shows, clown circus, princess appearances, and magic alternate. In the sports area, Basket Duisburg hosts the 3x3 basketball tournament.
Duisburg Hauptbahnhof is a 5-minute walk from the city centre. Reachable in 10 minutes from Düsseldorf and 15 minutes from Essen by S-Bahn and regional express. Arrival by public transport is expressly recommended, as the city centre is very busy on the day of the festival.
Sunday, April 26, 2026. Sunday with open shops from 1 PM to 6 PM.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds, stage, farmers' market, and sports activities.
Bouncy castle, maze, children's circus ring, stage shows for children, and the science mobile from the UDE.
