About Rosenmontagszug Duisburg
Rosenmontagszug Duisburg — edition 2026
Main Procession on Rosenmontag
The central highlight of the Duisburg Carnival season 2025/26 is the Rosenmontagszug on February 16, 2026. Motto: “Europe in the Heart — Confetti in the Blood”. Start at 1:11 PM at the Innenhafen, destination the festival tent at the old goods station.
Seven Processions Across the Entire City Area
Characteristic of Duisburg Carnival is its decentralised structure — in addition to the main procession, six other district processions take place before and on Rosenmontag: Meiderich on Blutwurstsonntag (Feb 8), the children's processions in Wehofen and Hamborn, and the magnificent Nelkensamstagszug Homberg–Moers on Feb 14, the Serm procession on Feb 15, and parallel to the main procession, the Neumühl “Pilssucher” procession. Each district cultivates its own royalty and forms of custom — a carnival structure rarely found in Germany.

Rosenmontag in the City on the Rhine
The Duisburg Carnival is one of the most vibrant festive traditions on the lower Rhine. Even though Duisburg is often overlooked in the shadow of the "strongholds" of Cologne and Düsseldorf, over two dozen carnival societies and the Hauptausschuss Duisburger Karneval organise a complete season with meetings, storming of the town hall, children's carnival, and a magnificent Rosenmontagszug. The 2026 edition runs under the season's motto “Europe in the Heart — Confetti in the Blood” — a clear gesture in times of political uncertainty.
The Main Procession — Innenhafen to Festival Tent
The central highlight is the main procession on Rosenmontag, February 16, 2026. Assembly from 10:00 AM, procession start at 1:11 PM in the Innenhafen / Schwanentor area. The route leads through Königstraße, past the town hall and the Salvatorkirche, to the festival tent at the former goods station. From there, the after-show party starts at 3:11 PM, parallel to the “Rosenmontag Total” party at the venue “viersieben” (admission €10). Estimated end of the procession around 5:00 PM.
Seven District Processions
Unlike in most carnival strongholds, Duisburg Carnival is spread across the entire city area — in addition to the main procession, six other district processions take place:
- Meiderich — Blutwurstsonntag, February 8, 2026
- Wehofen & Hamborn — Children's processions, February 14, 2026
- Homberg/Moers — Nelkensamstagszug, February 14, 2026 from 1:11 PM (Ottostraße in Hochheide, ~5 km route)
- Serm — District procession on February 15, 2026, with around 30 decorated floats, organised by KG Südstern
- Neumühl — “Die Pilssucher”, Rosenmontag, February 16, 2026
This decentralised structure makes Duisburg Carnival unique — each district has its own carnival identity, with its own royalty and societies.
Tradition and Self-Image
Duisburg Carnival consciously sees itself as the Carnival of the Common Man: no giant sponsors, no international stars, but decades of society work, many children's processions, and deeply rooted customs in the districts of Meiderich, Hamborn, Homberg, and Walsum. The city of Duisburg supports the customs with road closures, logistics, and a festival tent for the after-show.
Duisburg — Port Metropolis on the Rhine
Duisburg has around 500,000 inhabitants and is the largest inland port in Europe. In terms of carnival, the city belongs to the western Lower Rhine Carnival (between Cologne/Düsseldorf and the Ruhr area Carnival). The crossing of Catholic suburbs (Meiderich, Hamborn) and the Protestant city centre explains the diversity of the district processions — each with its own character and date.
