Demonstration, Raising of the Rainbow Flag at the Town Hall and Street Festival for Queer Visibility
The Duisburg Christopher Street Day (CSD), also known as Duisburg Pride, is the annual demonstration and celebration of the LGBTIQ* community in Duisburg and the western Ruhr area. On Saturday, July 25, 2026, the queer community will take to the streets once again — for diversity, against discrimination, for equal rights. The Duisburg CSD follows in the tradition of all worldwide CSD demonstrations, which commemorate the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 on New York's Christopher Street, when queer people first resisted a police raid, thus founding the modern LGBTIQ* movement.
The CSD day traditionally begins in the morning with the raising of the rainbow flag in front of Duisburg's Town Hall — a symbolic act by which the city of Duisburg publicly commits to diversity. Mayors and representatives from politics, churches, and civil society will be present.
Afterwards, the CSD demonstration starts: an approximately 2.5 km long procession through Duisburg's city center, with loud music, colorful flags, drag performances, and political messages. An intermediate rally at the Lehmbruck Museum will feature speeches, statements, and musical contributions. The endpoint is Averdunkplatz, where the street festival begins.
After the demonstration, Averdunkplatz transforms into a street festival with a stage, booths, and a bar area:
The street festival runs into the evening; many visitors then move on to Duisburg's city center bars and clubs.
The organizer is DUPride e.V., the association of Duisburg's queer people. DUPride not only organizes the annual CSD but is also active year-round in the Duisburg queer community — with regular meetups, self-help groups, political lobbying, and events. The association works closely with the Schwulen Netzwerk NRW, the LSVD, and local queer initiatives. Donations and volunteer support are welcome.
The independent city of Duisburg, with its approximately 500,000 inhabitants, is located on the western edge of the Ruhr area, at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers — and boasts Duisburg Port, the largest inland port in Europe. An industrial city with a long steel and mining tradition, today it is shaped by structural change with a university campus (University of Duisburg-Essen), Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, and cultural highlights such as the Lehmbruck Museum (20th-century sculpture) and the MKM Museum Küppersmühle. Duisburg's queer scene is smaller than in Cologne or Düsseldorf but well-connected and politically active — the CSD is its annual highlight.
Numerous CSDs take place in the Ruhr area between June and September: Cologne (Cologne Pride, one of Europe's largest CSDs), Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Mülheim, Oberhausen — and Duisburg. Each has its own character; Duisburg focuses on a politically strong demonstration through the city center followed by a manageable street festival. Those who want to visit several CSDs in the region will find a dense network of Pride events in the summer calendar.
The Duisburg CSD 2026 continues the established format: morning flag-raising at the Town Hall as a symbolic act by the city, demonstration through the city center with an intermediate rally and endpoint at Averdunkplatz, where a street festival with a stage, bar, and booths will take place. 2.5 km demonstration route, thousands of participants expected.
Free participation. Food and drinks at the street festival at market prices. Donations to DUPride e.V. are welcome — the event is largely supported by volunteers.
By public transport: Duisburg Hauptbahnhof (RE, IC, ICE, RB) — from there, a 5-minute walk to the Town Hall / König-Heinrich-Platz. Trams 901, 903 to the city center. By car: A40, A59 — city center parking garages (Forum, Königsgalerie, Averdunk). Due to demonstration closures, public transport is strongly recommended.
The demonstration, raising of the rainbow flag, intermediate rally, and street festival are free of charge. Participation is possible without prior registration. Those wishing to march with a group, a truck, or a banner should contact DUPride e.V. in advance ([email protected]).
Bring colorful clothing, rainbow accessories, banners, and a good mood. Don't forget sunscreen and water — the demonstration takes place during the midday heat. Photographers should respect personality rights: not all queer people are "out" and want to be recognizable online.
