Four-day wine festival at Göttingen's weekly market square with vintners from Rheinhessen
The Göttingen Wine Festival brings Germany's largest wine-growing region – Rheinhessen – to the central weekly market square of the university city. Three renowned wineries will be represented at the stand: Weingut Hammen, Weingut Dorst, and Weingut Busch. The festival covers classic Rheinhessen wines such as Riesling, Silvaner, and Müller-Thurgau, as well as exciting Burgundy varieties and experimental cuvées from the younger generation of winemakers.
The kickoff is an after-work program on Wednesday evening, May 13th, 2026, starting at 6 pm. From Thursday, May 14th, to Saturday, May 16th, the wine festival is open daily from 11 am to 11 pm. This covers both lunchtime gastronomy and the evening open-air atmosphere – two different moods that the festival offers at different times of the day.
Accompanying the wine tasting, a gastronomic offer is provided, tailored to the wines: Flammkuchen, cheese platters, seasonal asparagus specialties, sausage sandwiches, pretzels, and vegetarian options. The offering is deliberately kept classic and follows the wine festival tradition of the winemakers' home region of Rheinhessen.
DJ Franky provides the musical accompaniment – with a mix of lounge, subtle pop, and wine-affine sounds that shape the atmosphere of the weekly market square without overpowering conversations. The market square, with its central location in Göttingen's city center and proximity to cafes and restaurants, offers an ideal backdrop for a relaxed, urban wine festival.
Göttingen is one of Germany's most traditional university cities. The mix of academic audience, young professionals, and tourism shapes the atmosphere of the city center – also at the weekly market square, which is a central meeting point of urban life.
The four-day festival structure allows visitors to experience the event at different times of day and in various moods. The Wednesday after-work event is intended as a relaxed start, appealing to the city's working professionals. From Thursday to Saturday, the festival offers its full opening hours, with lunchtime gastronomy for city visitors and tourists, and the atmospheric evening opening until 11 pm.
The three participating wineries from Rheinhessen cover a broad range of products. Classic Rheinhessen white and red wines meet modern cuvées and Burgundy varieties. The winemakers themselves are present at the stand and answer questions about the vineyard site, vintage, and cellar techniques – direct interaction, not possible at large supermarket promotions.
