32nd edition of Europe's largest nature photography festival — lectures, exhibitions, and photo market
The GDT International Nature Photography Festival is Europe's largest and most prestigious festival for nature photography. The organizer is the Gesellschaft für Naturfotografie e.V. (GDT), the most important German professional and specialist association for nature and wildlife photography with around 1,000 members. Since the mid-1990s, the festival has taken place on the last weekend of October in Lünen, in the district of Unna — where the Ruhr area transitions into the north of Westphalia. 2026 marks the 32nd edition.
The focus is on the live lectures at the Heinz-Hilpert-Theater Lünen. International and national photographers — multiple winners of the World Press Photo Award, "Wildlife Photographer of the Year", Pulitzer Prize winners, and nature documentarians — present their work, discussing concepts, travel, patience, and ethics in nature photography. The lectures are the heart of the festival; seats in the theater are sold in advance through GDT ticketing.
Parallel to the main lectures, seminars and workshops take place in the side rooms — in-depth sessions for beginners and advanced participants on topics such as bird photography, macro, astrophotography, image editing, book publishing, and wildlife photography ethics. These smaller formats often book up quickly.
The photo market at the LÜKAZ cultural center brings together the most important camera manufacturers, lens makers, publishers, travel services, and photo agencies. OM SYSTEM, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Tamron, Sigma, and many others present new products and provide demo equipment. The market is free to enter — a key reason why the festival attracts several thousand visitors annually, many of whom do not attend the lectures but come for the market.
In addition to the lectures, the exhibitions shape the festival's identity. The Picture Hall displays the winning images from the renowned "GDT Nature Photographer of the Year" and "European Wildlife Photographer of the Year" competitions; an outdoor exhibition runs through the streets of Lünen; and photo publishers present their new releases in the Book Lounge area. Free short lectures and equipment demonstrations take place on the open stage at the market.
Lünen, with a population of just under 87,000 in the district of Unna, North Rhine-Westphalia, is located at the transition between the Ruhr area and the Münsterland region on the Lippe River. The city has developed a cultural infrastructure with the Heinz-Hilpert-Theater (named after the theater director born in Lünen) and the LÜKAZ cultural center, which has hosted the festival for three decades. For Lünen, the festival is an important autumn tourist highlight — hotels in Lünen, Dortmund, and Hamm are regularly fully booked during this week.
The 32nd GDT International Nature Photography Festival will take place from October 23 to 25, 2026, in Lünen. The main venue is the Heinz-Hilpert-Theater (Kurt-Schumacher-Straße 39); the program is complemented by events at the LÜKAZ cultural center and in the urban area of Lünen.
The organizer is the Gesellschaft für Naturfotografie e.V. (GDT). OM Digital Solutions (OM SYSTEM) has been the main sponsor for years. The festival combines ticketed lectures and seminars with free exhibitions, a book lounge, and a photo market.
According to the organizer, the complete lecture program for the 32nd edition will be published from mid-July 2026 on gdtfoto.de; ticket sales will begin in August 2026. The program structure has followed this proven pattern for years:
