Neighbourhood summer festival of the "Am Kanal" miners' settlement in Lünen on August 1st and 2nd, 2026 — on the Datteln-Hamm Canal with a children's festival, Schlager evening, and pea soup
The Kanalfest Lünen is a special example of vibrant district culture: The Bergmannsiedlung „Am Kanal" — a historic miners' settlement in Lünen — maintains its neighbourhood tradition with a two-day summer festival. From August 1st to 2nd, 2026, celebrations will take place directly on the Datteln-Hamm Canal, which runs along the settlement. The Siedler-Interessengemeinschaft, as a volunteer organisation of the settlement's residents, organises the festival.
Festival start on Saturday afternoon. Traditional beer tapping, the children's festival with games and hands-on activities for the youngest residents, and in the evening, a festive event with live music or a DJ and a dance atmosphere. Generations mingle here — from the youngest residents to the oldest settlers who still remember the time of active coal mines.
Sunday highlight: the traditional pea soup from 12 PM — a miners' specialty that has been cooked in pots for generations on Sundays. Pea soup with sausages, bacon, and hearty bread is classic miner's fare. Afterwards, Frühschoppen with live music, a cosy wind-down in the late summer sun by the canal.
The Bergmannsiedlung „Am Kanal" is a historic miners' settlement in Lünen, located in the transition area of the Ruhr region to Münsterland. The settlement was built in the early 20th century for the miners of the nearby collieries and is today one of the few well-preserved examples of this mining social architecture. With typical brick terraced houses, small gardens, and communal street spaces — the settlement has been a developed neighbourhood network for generations.
The Datteln-Hamm Canal is a 47 km long waterway connecting Datteln (on the Wesel-Datteln Canal) with Hamm (on the Lippe-Seitenkanal) — part of the northwest German waterway network. In Lünen, it crosses the city and forms the border of the "Am Kanal" miners' settlement. The canal makes industrial history tangible — it was built to transport the hard coal from the Lünen collieries.
Lünen in the district of Unna (North Rhine-Westphalia) has about 85,000 inhabitants and belongs to the northern Ruhr region. Characterised by hard coal mining (Minister Achenbach colliery, Preußen colliery) — today it is mainly a residential city with industrial middle classes. The city is located directly on the Lippe (the northernmost Ruhr tributary). The Kanalfest is a good example of the social tradition that Lünen's mining families have carried on for generations.
