Lünen's 40th Torch Swimming — 100 swimmers with torches and illuminated rafts parade down the Lippe on Advent weekend
Every year in mid-December, on a Saturday evening, all of Lünen freezes — and swims anyway. The Torch Swimming in the Lippe has been an integral part of the pre-Christmas season in the town in the Unna district since 1986. In 2026, the spectacle will take place for the 40th time. The organizers are the Cultural Office of the City of Lünen and the TauchSportClub Lünen 1976 e.V. (TSC Lünen), which is simultaneously celebrating its 50th club anniversary.
The 40th edition will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2026. The sequence follows a well-rehearsed dramaturgy:
Behind the 100 swimmers are about 100 more helpers from Lünen clubs — security team on land, lamp carriers, raft builders, helpers for the Bengal fire. A total of about 200 people are directly involved. Several local clubs have been participating for almost 27 years — a traditional achievement that shows what a local festival means in Lünen.
The TauchSportClub Lünen 1976 e.V. has been the driving force behind the Torch Swimming for decades. From a diving club, a community has developed that shoulders the organizational burden of the spectacle every year. In 2026, the club also celebrates its 50th anniversary — an occasion to celebrate the Torch Swimming with extra festivity.
The Torch Swimming is free. There are no grandstands, no ticket checks — the entire city along the Lippe riverbank becomes a spectator zone. Those who want to experience the spectacle optimally should come early, find a good spot on one of the bridges or on the bank, and bring warm clothing.
Lünen (around 86,000 inhabitants) is the largest city in the Unna district and is located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area, on the Lippe river. The city is historically shaped by mining and industry — structural change has transformed Lünen, but traditions like the Torch Swimming have remained. In December, the Lünen Christmas Market in the city center combines with the Torch Swimming weekend to create a festive Advent experience.
The 40th edition of the Torch Swimming in 2026 also marks the occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the TauchSportClub Lünen 1976 e.V. The traditional sequence of events — torch procession in the city, Lippe swim with rafts, and Bengal fire finale — will be maintained. Current information on routes and road closures will be published by the City of Lünen on luenen.de.
