Four-day Ascension fair from May 14th to 17th, 2026, featuring the "Tiki Taki XXL" (45m giant swing) and fireworks on the Lippe river
The Himmelfahrtskirmes is the largest folk festival (Volksfest) in the city of Lünen in the Unna district — one of the most traditional fair events in the northern Ruhr area. It always takes place around Ascension Day and attracts tens of thousands of visitors from Lünen, Dortmund, Werne, and the Unna district. The 2026 edition stands out particularly because "Tiki Taki XXL", one of Europe's most spectacular portable rides, celebrates its premiere in Lünen.
The 2026 Himmelfahrtskirmes runs from Thursday, May 14th (Ascension Day), to Sunday, May 17th, 2026. Opening hours:
The highlight of this year's fair is the Polynesian-designed giant swing "Tiki Taki XXL". With its technical specifications, it ranks among the world's elite portable amusement rides:
Anyone seeking the ultimate fair adrenaline rush will find it in Lünen in 2026.
Besides Tiki Taki XXL, the fair offers classic fair attractions:
The fair opens on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, with an ecumenical service on the bumper cars — a Lünen specialty. After the service and the official opening, there will be 1 hour of free rides from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on many attractions. A unique start that combines spiritual tradition with fairground fun.
Friday is Family Day: Half-price rides until 6:00 PM on all attractions — the ideal day for families with children. The day concludes with grand fireworks on the Lippe river — the Lippe flows a few hundred meters from the fairgrounds and provides the perfect backdrop for the pyrotechnic show.
The venue for the fair is the central combined event space of the Theaterparkplatz and Pfarrer-Bremer-Parkplatz in Lünen's city center — within walking distance of Lünen train station and the downtown area. Its central location makes the fair easily accessible for residents and visitors from neighboring towns.
Lünen is located in the Unna district, at the transition between the Ruhr area and Münsterland, on the Lippe river. With around 86,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the Unna district. Historically a mining town, it now focuses on a medium-sized economy and urban development. The Himmelfahrtskirmes has been the city's most important folk festival for generations and is one of the events that significantly draws attention to Lünen beyond its city limits each year.
In recent years, the Himmelfahrtskirmes Lünen has made a name for itself with spectacular ride premieres. With "Tiki Taki XXL" in 2026, the city makes a clear statement: If you're looking for a fair with a wow factor in the northern Ruhr area, Lünen is the place to be. Add to that the contrasting mix of Family Day, fireworks on the Lippe, and a service on the bumper cars — a fair with real character.
