Traditional village Kirchweih in the Bamberg region with a parade and Kerwasbaum
The Trunstadter Kirchweih – simply called Trunstadter Kerwa in Bamberg dialect – is the main Kirchweih of the Trunstadt district. It traditionally takes place at the beginning of July and is considered the most important village festival in the municipality. The venue is the sports field of SpVgg Trunstadt – which, with its festival tent, carousels, shooting galleries, and beer stands, becomes the village festival grounds for four days.
The program follows the classic schedule of an Upper Franconian village Kirchweih: Friday as the opening day with the official beer tapping and festival tent opening; Saturday as the parade day with the raising of the Kerwasbaum and a dance evening; Sunday as the main Kerwa day with a church service, parade, morning pint, and lunch; Monday as the closing day with the Auskerwa.
The Kirchweih is organized by the association Heimatliebe Trunstadt – Kerwasburschen und Kerwasmadla e.V.. The young men (Burschen) and women (Madla) of the village organize the parade, the decorating and raising of the Kerwasbaum, the dance around the tree, and the election of the Kerwa couple. They wear traditional Franconian costume – the Burschen in Lederhosen, white shirts, and hats, the Madla in Dirndl and a Kerwakranz. This tradition has been maintained in Trunstadt for generations.
In the festival tent at the sports field, various bands provide the atmosphere: on Friday often a cover band (in 2025, for example, "Big Sound Jack" played), on Saturday a party band, on Sunday traditionally brass music during the morning pint, and on Sunday evening dance music. Gastronomically, classic Franconian specialties are served: Schäuferla (pork shoulder), Franconian sausages, pretzels, and freshly tapped Franconian beer from the region (Mahrs-Bräu, Brauerei Will, Brauerei Mainlust).
Viereth-Trunstadt is a small municipality with around 3,500 inhabitants in the southern Bamberg district, directly on the banks of the Main river west of the city of Bamberg. The municipality comprises the two namesake districts Viereth and Trunstadt, as well as the hamlets Weiher and Hirschaid. Each district has its own Kirchweih, which is why the municipality's summer calendar is packed with festivals: Weiherer Kirchweih (May), Trunstadter Fischkerwa (early June), Trunstadter Kirchweih (early July), and Kirchweih Viereth (mid-July).
The Trunstadter Kerwa 2026 runs for four days from Friday, July 3, to Monday, July 6, 2026, at the SpVgg Trunstadt sports field. The exact date is confirmed via the official Bamberg region (City and Lkr Bamberg) Kirchweih calendar.
