One Night, Three Stages, One Island Site in the Heart of Heide
The Dithmarschen Theatre Night is a joint production of Dithmarschen's most important stages: the Schleswig-Holstein State Theatre, the Meldorf Theatre Group, and the Heide VHS Theatre present theatre, dance, and performance across multiple venues in one evening. After two editions at the Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf, the 15th iteration moves to Heide for the first time in 2026 — to the Lüttenheid Museum Island, a historically significant island site in the city centre.
The concept is refreshingly simple yet special: the audience moves freely between the stages, both indoors and outdoors. Short theatre scenes, dance interludes, readings, and musical contributions alternate. Between performances, there's time for a glass of wine, conversations with the actors, and to admire the historic island architecture. The entire site becomes a stage, with the audience becoming part of the action.
Heide is the district capital of Dithmarschen in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, known for Germany's largest undeveloped market square. The Lüttenheid Museum Island houses several local history museums and is a central cultural hub for the city — a perfect setting for a festival that brings Dithmarschen's theatrical tradition into the public space.
The 15th edition of the Dithmarschen Theatre Night moves to Heide for the first time in 2026. The entire Lüttenheid Museum Island site — indoors and outdoors — becomes a performance space. The audience wanders between the stages, each piece lasts a few minutes, with time in between to stroll through the venerable rooms of the local history museums.
Summer night on the Museum Island, small stages spread across the park and museum rooms, with food trucks and drink stands in between — the Theatre Night is a summer festival for Dithmarschen's culture, a meeting point for theatre lovers from across the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
The exact detailed schedule of individual pieces is usually announced by the theatres a few weeks before the event. Advance sales at the Heide Tourist Information Centre and the Peter Panter bookshop in Meldorf, starting March 23, 2026.
