33 Easter bonfires in the districts — Lünen tradition on Holy Saturday
The Easter bonfire is one of the oldest and most visible spring rituals in Westphalian tradition. In Lünen — a medium-sized city with a good 86,000 inhabitants in the Unna district of North Rhine-Westphalia — dozens of Easter bonfires burn simultaneously in almost all districts every Holy Saturday. In 2026, 33 Easter bonfires are registered — a slight decrease compared to the 37 events in 2025, but still a vibrant display of Lünen's traditions.
The Easter bonfires are spread across the entire city area:
The main bonfire is hosted by the Schützenverein 1925 Lünen-Süd on its club grounds at Sedanstraße 4 — starting on Holy Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 5 PM. As in previous years, hundreds of residents will gather for the joint lighting and a social gathering with sausages and drinks.
The city of Lünen is explicitly not the organizer of the Easter bonfires — it merely oversees the approval and safety regulations. The organizers are clubs, church communities, and initiatives from the respective districts. This decentralization is the key to the high number of fires and the district-specific character of the tradition: Each Easter bonfire has its own history, its regular attendees, its local traditions.
The Easter bonfire traditionally marks the beginning of spring, the victory of light over darkness, and — interpreted in a Christian context — the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. The tradition has held particularly strong in the Westphalian and Lower Rhenish regions; in Lünen, it is a central community event that makes the districts and their club structures visible.
A total of 33 Easter bonfires are registered for Holy Saturday 2026 in Lünen — a slight decrease compared to 37 the previous year, but still a very high number in historical comparison, making the vibrant Westphalian tradition of these districts visible.
