Christmas market in front of a historic castle backdrop on the 1st Advent weekend
What makes the Illinger Burg-Adventsmarkt unique is its location: instead of a plain marketplace, it takes place in the Burgpark around the historic Burg Kerpen — a late medieval complex with remnants of walls, a gatehouse, and a park-like environment. This backdrop makes the market one of the most atmospheric Advent experiences in Saarland: strolling here with a mug of mulled wine in hand between the castle walls feels like stepping back centuries.
Burg Kerpen was a moated castle whose origins date back to the 13th century. Throughout its history, it was the seat of several noble families, was destroyed in the 17th century, and is preserved today as a ruin. The surrounding castle park with its old trees and paths is used as a local recreation area all year round — for the Advent market, it becomes a festive stage.
In 2025, the market celebrated its 10th edition — proof of the format's establishment. What began as a smaller suburban Advent market has developed into a regionally known destination. Over 50 exhibitors offer:
For children, there is a small miniature train that runs through the castle park, as well as a storyteller who tells winter tales in an atmospheric setting. Local choirs and musical groups perform Christmas repertoire on a festive stage — from school choirs to vocal ensembles.
Traditionally, the market takes place on the first Advent weekend — in 2025 from November 28th to 29th. In 2026, the first Advent weekend falls on November 28th/29th. Opening hours are typically Friday from 5 PM, Saturday until 10 PM. This timing sets the market apart from the large traditional markets in Saarbrücken or Trier — and positions it as a tip for a cozy weekend in the Saarland hinterland.
The municipality of Illingen — also called the Illtalmetropole — is located in the northern Neunkirchen district. With its seven districts (including Hüttigweiler, Hirzweiler, Welschbach, Wustweiler, Uchtelfangen, and Wemmetsweiler), Illingen has a rural charm. The Burg-Adventsmarkt fits this image: not a large urban event, but atmospheric and manageable.
The date for 2026 will be officially confirmed by the municipality of Illingen in the autumn. Expected schedule according to tradition: Friday from 5 PM opening, Saturday open continuously until 10 PM.
