Lower Franconian Kirchweih in the courtyards and streets of the Old Town
Kleinostheim is a Lower Franconian municipality in the district of Aschaffenburg, located directly on the banks of the Main river, opposite the city of Aschaffenburg. Its location on the river and its proximity to Aschaffenburg, Frankfurt, and the Rhine-Main region make Kleinostheim a lively place with active club life. The annual Straßen- und Hofkerb is the convivial highlight of the village calendar.
The hallmark of the Kleinostheim Kerwa is its unique concept: No central festival tent, but Kerwa in the courtyards and streets of the Old Town. The member clubs of the Vereinsring Kleinostheim 1954 e.V. open private courtyards — the property owners provide their inner courtyards, and the clubs set up their own catering station there. Each courtyard gets its own character, its own atmosphere, its own specialty. Strolling through the Old Town, you discover new impressions from courtyard to courtyard.
The traditional Kerbumzug marks the festive start. It begins at the corner of Hörsteiner Straße/Schillerstraße and proceeds along the festival mile to the Kirchplatz. There, the traditional beer tapping ceremony takes place — the official opening of the Kerwa. Clubs, traditional costume groups, and the Kerbborschen (young men with a special festival role) participate in the procession.
The Vereinsring Kleinostheim was founded in 1954 and is the umbrella organization for numerous local clubs. The Kerwa showcases the diversity of club life: the fire department, sports clubs, music clubs, heritage society, church choirs, carnival club, and many others offer catering stations with their own specialties in 'their' courtyards. It's a friendly competition among clubs — each club presents its best program, its best food, its best musical offerings.
Culinary-wise, the Kerwa benefits from its location on the Main river: Lower Franconian tradition meets Rhine-Main influences. Bratwurst, Schäufele (pork shoulder), Schweinshax'n (pork knuckle), accompanied by Apfelwein (apple wine) from the nearby Rheingau or Aschaffenburg region, Franconian beer, and Franconian wine. Apfelwein courtyards and beer courtyards alternate, with guests moving between the establishments.
Each courtyard features different music: a brass band in one, a cover band in another, Apfelwein songs in a third, a DJ in a fourth. This diversity is part of its charm — as you walk through the streets, the musical mood changes with each courtyard.
The Straßen- und Hofkerb has been around since the mid-1990s — 2026 will celebrate its 32nd edition. In this time, the event has grown from a small club idea into a regionally known Volksfest (folk festival) attraction. If you're looking for an alternative to classic festival tent Volksfeste — with genuine village community, an original concept, and Franconian-Rhine-Main charm — this is the place to be.
The 32nd Straßen- und Hofkerb 2026 will take place from August 29 to 31 in the Old Town of Kleinostheim. The Vereinsring Kleinostheim 1954 e.V., with its numerous member clubs, will transform the courtyards, squares, and streets of the historic town center into a diverse festival mile — each courtyard with its own character, its own catering, its own music.
The traditional Kerbumzug starts at the corner of Hörsteiner Straße/Schillerstraße and proceeds to the festival mile leading to the Kirchplatz. There, the festive beer tapping ceremony will officially open the Kerwa. On the evenings of the three festival days, guests will move between Apfelwein and beer courtyards, between brass bands and cover bands, between Lower Franconian and Rhine-Main festival atmospheres.
Detailed program with participating courtyards, clubs, and music groups will be published in advance on vereinsring-kleinostheim.de.
Kleinostheim can be reached via the A3 motorway (exit Aschaffenburg-West) — directly on the banks of the Main river, opposite Aschaffenburg. Approx. 35 minutes from Frankfurt, approx. 1 hour from Würzburg. By public transport: S-Bahn from Frankfurt or RB train from Aschaffenburg to Kleinostheim, then a 10-minute walk from the station to the Old Town.
Admission to the Kerwa is free. Food and drinks are available at the club stands in the courtyards and streets at Franconian-Rhine-Main Kerwa prices. Proceeds benefit the club's activities.
For the Kerbumzug, be at the corner of Hörsteiner Straße/Schillerstraße early to catch the start, then follow the procession to the Kirchplatz — the beer tapping ceremony at the Kirchplatz is a highlight. If you want to fully experience the courtyard concept, plan an evening for 'courtyard hopping'. Wear comfortable shoes (cobblestones in the old town). Bring sun protection if the weather is sunny.
