Light Against the Dark Season
The Rostock Light Week is a project by Stadtwerke Rostock and takes place every year in early November—precisely when the days become noticeably shorter. The idea behind it is simple and beautiful: to counter the damp, cold, dark season with light, color, and atmosphere for a whole week.
The City Center as a Light Stage
For a week, Rostock's city center transforms into an immersive light art exhibition. From Steintor, through Neuer Markt and Universitätsplatz, to the medieval Kröpeliner Tor, spectacular light installations and projections shine. Along Kröpeliner Straße, visitors encounter luminous walking acts in glittering costumes, and colorful motifs glow from the windows of the Stadtwerke building.
Shows and Tours
The program includes impressive walking acts, fire and LED shows, as well as daily guided night watchman tours, where the history of the Hanseatic city is told in the glow of lanterns. A highlight is the grand laser show on Universitätsplatz, which bathes the historic facades in moving light patterns.
Light Week with a Social Cause
The Light Week is more than just a visual spectacle: it concludes with a benefit concert, the proceeds of which go to local associations. In the past, Stadtwerke Rostock has, for example, presented donations to initiatives promoting democracy and diversity as part of the Light Week. Thus, the event combines light art with social engagement.
