837th birthday of the Port of Hamburg – the world's largest port festival
When Hamburg celebrates its Port Anniversary in May, the harbour front between Sankt Pauli Fish Market, Landungsbrücken, and HafenCity transforms into a miles-long festival mile. With around one million visitors, the festival is the largest port celebration in the world – a statement of Hamburg's status as a global port and gateway to the world.
The history begins on May 7, 1189, the day Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted Hamburg's merchants toll exemption on the Elbe – the birth of the Port of Hamburg. Since 1977, this day has been celebrated annually with a public festival. 2026 marks the 837th birthday – a date that cannot be stated in quite the same way in any other port city in the world.
Each year, the Port Anniversary selects a partner country that is represented with its own stand, cultural program, and ships. In 2026, the Liverpool City Region (UK) will be the guest – a connection between two port cities rich in tradition. A British cultural program with live acts from Liverpool and maritime history is expected.
Along the Landungsbrücken, you'll find maritime markets, street art performances, and food trucks. Families can enjoy hands-on activities related to shipbuilding, knot tying, and maritime museums. Ship tours offer a glimpse into naval technology, historic sailing ships, and modern freighters.
The festival area stretches from the Sankt Pauli Fish Market via the Landungsbrücken to the HafenCity with the Elbphilharmonie. Both Hamburg districts (Hamburg-Mitte with the harbour districts) are fully integrated; even the Reeperbahn takes on a festive flair on weekends.
From May 8 to 10, 2026, Hamburg will celebrate its 837th Port Anniversary along the harbour front between Sankt Pauli Fish Market, Landungsbrücken, and HafenCity. Three days of programming from morning until late at night, with around one million visitors expected.
The partner country for 2026 is the Liverpool City Region (UK) – a deliberate bridge between two of Europe's most important port cities. British music acts, a dedicated Liverpool pavilion, and maritime ships from England are expected.
