Jewellery craft and street art in the heart of the gemstone town on the first weekend of August
Idar-Oberstein has been considered the gemstone capital of the world for centuries, and nowhere can this tradition be experienced more vibrantly than at the German Gem Cutter and Goldsmith Market. For two days, the lower pedestrian zone of Oberstein transforms into an open-air market where around fifty select exhibitors present their work directly against the backdrop of the Felsenkirche.
The special feature: Many cutters and goldsmiths work at their stands, turning small grinding wheels, polishing cabochons, hammering rings, and soldering delicate settings. Anyone who has ever wanted to know how a raw agate becomes a shining pendant or how gemstones can be set in a hand-forged gold mount can ask questions and view works up close in a relaxed atmosphere. The offerings range from classic traditional jewellery to minimalist designer pieces and opulent statement necklaces, complemented by minerals from around the world and small gifts from regional manufacturers.
At the same time, the parallel street theatre festival fills the city centre with acrobatics, clowning, music, comedy, and walking acts. Companies from Germany and other European countries alternate on the OIE stage at Christus Kirchplatz; in addition, smaller acts repeatedly surprise visitors between the market stalls, in building entrances, or in the middle of the pedestrian zone. Those travelling with children should allow time for the longer stage slots in the afternoon, with a stroll through the market in between.
On Sunday, the shops in the city centre open from 1 PM as part of a shopping Sunday – merging the jewellery market, street art, and regular retail into an all-day experience that makes the gemstone town one of the most vibrant destinations in Rhineland-Palatinate's summer.
